“Very hot and busy”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

Booked a Superior room for three nights and the location is wonderful, right by the river and walking distance to the city and river walks. I was disappointed with the size of the bed, being only a double, but we did have two windows which overlooked the outside seating area and river. We had a complimentary bottle of beer and two water on the first day and nothing after that. No facilities in the room to make a hot drink. No information in the room as to what was available although the Manager kept telling us all we had to do was ring down. The pub is very busy and the drinks are very expensive so we ate and drank in town. Breakfasts were the only meals we had and they were served differently each morning depending which staff were on. The food was lovely. It was one of the hottest days of the year and the windows only open a small amount and it was very noisy due to the traffic etc outside. There was a Jazz night on so the place was packed and very noisy, however the pub did finish serving at 11pm, so wasnt their fault. There was a dirty glass in the room when we arrived and the shower cubicle needed a good clean. We had a lovely weekend but I did feel slightly let down by my room

Room Tip: I think there are only 12 rooms, we were in 11 which overlooks the front. If the weather had been di...

At first sight, looked like a wonderful place to stop and have a drink. On closer inspection, outside area was filthy so we walked indoors. Stood at bar while bartenders chatted for 5 minutes not serving anyone. Finally got my order in: One pint of lager, one bottle of Koppaberg, One half shandy. £12.65 !!??!!!!. I gave our bartender £15 and waited for my change. It never came..she had walked off. After much waiting around, finally received my change with the smallest apology possible. This place is a tourist trap. AVOID!!

Excellent position just on the river by a bridge. Can be accessed via the grounds of Trinity College, then down to the Thames and a short walk to the hotel. Great food, atmosphere and location....and the variety of beer is good as well.

Visited on two occasions recently, food was very good. Variety of different things on the menu that is different from typical pub grub. Only downfall was the service. Very slow. Would definitely return.

There's nothing better than sitting at Head of the River on a hot day enjoying a drink. Mind you, the price of the drinks is a bit high, the double gin and tonic we ordered cost £8.40 and my pint was almost £5. We also had a meal which was better value. The foood was very good and the choice was good enough.

We stayed at the Head of the River for 1 night in June for my Hen Do. We booked 4 rooms, and because some rooms can sleep 3/4 with a sofa bed, the price was very reasonable. The location is beautiful, right next to the river and I was really, pleasantly, surprised by the quality of the rooms - I often stay in chain hotels where all rooms are the same, but here, each room had its own unique style which was lovely. The bathroom was small but finished to a very high standard. If you have mobility problems, the stairs might be an issue as there were alot of them! The beds were large and comfortable. The breakfast was good and well organised (impressive when its for a group of 13 people). I would certainly stay here again and recommend it without hesitation.

Room Tip: One of our rooms had a view of the river which was beautiful.
