Oxford Spires Hotel
Ranked #8 of 44 Hotels in Oxford
Reviewed November 10, 2010

My husband and I have wanted to visit Oxford for some time and chose the Oxford Spires as a quality, well-located hotel.
Reception, bar and restaurant staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient, and the quality of the breakfast and bar food was good.
Our room was huge with a large bathroom, both immaculately clean, and a lack of towels was speedily rectified.
My husband was delighted with the ample free parking, a major consideration in Oxford.
We were well able to walk the distance into Oxford and back, but older residents may have struggled and might have believed the hotel was nearer the city centre than it is.
My only criticism, if it can be considered a criticism, is that the hotel is short on character if you are choosing it as a tourist.
But it is ideal for the business traveller, and there were many there during our stay, with a conference and a dinner taking place.

We stayed one night in the Oxford Spires Four Pillars for a stop from Wales to London.
Its a bit outside of Oxford center and it takes you 15-20 minutes to walk into the town. A busstop is near the hotel, but we did not use it. Because of the location, it is a quiet place to stay.

The hotel is on an enclosed area with a lot of parking facilities. We stayed in room 8 which was spaceious and clean. From the standard that is provided, we would say this is at least what you can expect for the price. The stuff was friendly, but as we did not use any special service, we cannot say how helpful they are.

Free WiFi is provided, but only with a limited time and traffic package.

Breakfast is served as a British breakfast buffet, so you have the typical choise of coocked stuff. As usual for a buffet, you cannot gurantee that everything that should be hot is still hot...

Overall, the say was ok, but for the price, you could have expected a bit more.

My wife and I had a lovely time staying at this hotel whilst attending a wedding there. It has ample parking and it is possible to walk into Oxford along the banks of the river. Our room was quite spacious and very clean. There is a health club where we both enjoyed a swim and several minutes in the steam room. Breakfast was also very good.

Simply, by no stretch of the imagination is this a four star hotel. It is a very expensive Travelodge style hotel. If you are looking a hotel that gives you that sense of a 'special' night or weekend away then please don"t choose here.

To be fair, there is not too much to complain about; the staff are friendly, the location is not too bad, but then Travelodge, Ibis and other chain hotels offer very similar benefits but don't pretend to be a four star hotel. This Establishment has clearly managed to gain four star status by ticking boxes- a TV speaker system in the toilet.....yes- and yes, weird. Dressing gowns on the beds- but on old peoples beds. A mini bar that consisted of putting out a bottle of beer, a bottle of orange juice and a bottle of pepsi, on a dressing table....."oh look! a room temperature bottle of Carling mmmmmm- well this is clearly a four star hotel"

If you are apathetic in general and have money to spare then you will love this place. If you desire a memorable, stylish and interesting hotel, then don't go here, it will make you feel sick in your face.

I read another review of this hotel which stated that it had the ambience and look of an old folks home- very accurate.

The hotel is in a great location for seeing Oxford and the staff are friendly and helpful but the room itself seemed a bit tired - could do with updating (Flat screen TV, not needing a voucher for internet access etc etc)

The hotel is very conveniently situated for anyone approaching from the A34, and the centre of Oxford is an easy walk away. While fairly anonymous in decor, the hotel was pleasant & well maintained, & our room was a good size. Everything was very clean, and the staff were helpful & friendly. Breakfast was quite decent, including the coffee (this is not always the case at many hotels!). The swimming pool and other leisure facilities were a welcome bonus, although we did not have time to use them.
I would definitely stay here again on future visits to Oxford.

I would not recommend this hotel. To be fair, it is newly built, well located some 10 minutes walk from town, surrounded by green and the staff are polite. It was clean. Enough of the positives. It is a travesty that a developer had such a gem of a site close to the river, close to town, surrounded by fields and then built what looks like and feels like an old people's home. I have nothing against old people, but a four star hotel should have some style. The design and layout of the buildings, with long corridors, beset with firedoors, the low ceilings throughout the building, the ugly but functional furniture of the restaurant, the high backed chairs with wings, the white pvc windows .. all straight from a coolie cutter care home design catalogue. The doors throughout the property are cheap the bathroom fittings are cheap and ugly, the "Caution the water is hot" stickers in the bathroom add to the ambiance as much as the empty rawl pugs from a soap dish whose location has since been moved and the torn wall paper where the night tables have bashed against the wall. Breakfast did not start until 0800 at weekends and the room was expensive.
