Holiday Inn Oxford
Ranked #12 of 44 Hotels in Oxford
Reviewed December 28, 2011

Our wonderful (not) travel agent changed our hotel at the last minute from one in the heart of Oxford to one at the edge. Apart from the difficulty in then finding the hotel (it depends which way you come - its smack bang on the a34) it presents well. The staff were very professional and the rooms surprisingly large and well appointed. The room was clean, had a good bathroom and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was quite good.
The only issue is getting into town. The taxis must do pretty well and its a long way from the city centre in relative terms. There is a park and ride nearby, with regular buses, however getting there isnt the easiest route, via a garage and having to find an ad hoc entry point. Absolutely no good for anyone with movement issues, not able to walk far etc.
Nevertheless this is a good hotel which is very comfortable. Seems to be quite popular with travelling businessmen and small tour groups. Even though it is right beside a busy motorway, there is absolutely no road noise whatsoever.

The room was clean and comfortable and a good temperature. A cot was provided for us for our baby at very short notice. The bathroom was clean and we were very pleased with the facilities. The staff were extremely polite and nothing was too much hassle for them. The breakfast was excellent and the evening meals were very good. They were quite expensive but the quality of the food was excellent. I would definitely stay here again - it is a great hotel.

Stayed November 2011 in twin room. The room was lovely and clean, quite spacious with two armchairs as well as dressing table and chair. Staff were mainly polite and friendly especially the breakfast staff - nothing was too much trouble for them - fresh decaff coffee (not instant) and a poached egg on request. The gym was good and open when I wanted it unlike some other hotels where it is hardly open. The pool was quite small, not much good for exercise but would suit families. Main reason I didn't give this 5 stars was that the room was quite hot despite having the blower on and although the room was well sound proofed from the road, we couldn't open the window as it was then very noisy with the busy road traffic nearby.
If you want to go into Oxford it is a short walk to the park and ride and only £4 per couple for a return ticket, the buses run until about 11.20 so it was excellent and easy to go into Oxford for a meal in the evening, only a short journey. There is also a services in the same complex which includes a Starbucks.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front if you want to open a window at night

Staying nearby, my friends and I decided to have dinner at the Holiday Inn. Big mistake. The food was poor quality, overpriced and the service disappointing. The wine (£22) arrived already opened and tasted sour. My friend's steak had three inches of fat and gristle at one end of it which was inedible and he had to pay extra for his chips. The chef hasn't learnt to cook slow roasted pork belly and still have crackling on it (even I know how to do that). Have you ever had bread and butter pudding without saltanas in it? You can if you go to this place! How do you fancy being served by a waitress who sniffs all the time? I was half expecting her to wipe her nose on the back of her sleeve at one point. Of course 10% service charge is added to your bill automatically. Total bill (3 mains, 3 deserts and a bottle of vinegar) £100.
Well done Holiday Inn. Hard to get worse.

Thank you for posting your review on Trip Advisor. Please accept my sincere apologies for the poor quality meal you received when dining with your friends - this is disappointing as we usually receive good feedback but appear to have let you down on this occasion.
With regard to service charge, this is optional and can be removed from your bill if requested.
I am sorry again for your disappointment.

The dinner was awful. I had slow roast pork belly, tasteless and greasy. Possibly had seen 3 minutes in a microwave. My wife had sausage and mash with onions. The caramelised onions were out of a jar, the sausages tasteless. Both dishes had gravy that was absolutely without any depth and tasted as though it came straight out of a packet.
Do not eat there, it is a waste of money.
The service was good, but could not counteract the inability of the cooks.
Breakfast was OK

My first impression of the hotel was very good. I liked the building, the reception area looked nice and the people at the front desk seemed efficient. We arrived at about 13:45. We were told that our room will be ready in about 15 minutes, which were OK with us. Our travel plan was to have a quick lunch and see Oxford, visit some of the colleges etc. Since we had to wait about 15 minutes for our room, we decided to have lunch at the hotel. That was a huge mistake on our part, because IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET THE FOOD. To be precise, it took about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get it( for two adults and one child). By the time we finished it, it was already 16:00. The reception cleark was very vague in explaining to us where the bus stop was and how to get to Oxford. He seemed to be very busy (though I did not see other guests near by). By the time we found the bus and got to Oxford, the places we wanted to see were not admitting any visitors, because it was closing time. THAT IS HOW OUR TRAVEL PLANS WERE RUINED BY THIS HOTEL. We were not able to see Oxford the next day, because we planed to see the Blenheim palace and get on a train at 15:15.

The next day was a Saturday, and there was only one person at the reception desk. I had to stay in line just to find out how to get to Blenheim. According to the receptionist we had to take a bus to Oxford, and then to take another bus to Blenheim. Though, when we checked in the day before, we were told that there is a bus, that we can take from the hotel directly to Blenheim. We took a taxi to Blenheim instead, and arranged with the driver to pick us up from there.

I have worked in the hotel industry before. In fact, I had my training at one of the Intercontinental hotels in Europe in the early 90s. I understand that now Intercontinental hotels and Holiday Inns are the same chain. It is very sad that Intercontinental now is associated with service like this.
My recommendation to people planning to stay at this hotel:
1. Do not use the restaurant for lunch or dinner. Breakfast is OK, because it is a buffet and you do not have to wait for food.
2 do not rely on reception stuff for information, be prepared to be"brushed off" when you ask a question, or to be referred to other hotel service to answer your question
3 If you have a "Blenheim package", remind the reception stuff to give you your vouchers to Blenheim. These are vouchers and they need to be exchanged for the tickets when you get there.( the reception stuff does not know it)
4 if your room is over the front entrance, change it. I could hear people talk loudly near the front entrance at 2 o'clock at night.

Myvrecommendations to the management:
1 Do something about the restaurant. The connection between the kitchen and the dining room seems to be lost.
2. Print some maps showing hotel, bus stops, and the shortest way to the bus.
3. Have some information printed on how to get to Blenheim palace, which bus to take etc.
4. Train reception stuff in customer service. Intercontinental used to have great training videos on that. Maybe you can get them. Or send them for training to other Holiday Inns who are better in customer service. We also stayed at Holiday Inn Express Royal Mile in Edinburgh. The service was excellent.
5 Please give my thanks to Housekeeping at your hotel. It was great.

We have stayed here a few times now, for convenience during nights out in Oxford.

It's a very good budget hotel. Free parking, friendly staff (a little slow on the bar at times though), clean rooms, quiet accommodation in the double glazed rooms, comfy beds, well equipped rooms.

For the prices they charge,it's hard to find serious faults here. We ate sandwiches in the bar at lunchtime which were perfectly acceptable but we didn't try the restaurant in the evening.

Highly recommended for a stop over in Oxford.

Room Tip: Go for double glazed rooms - not all are.
