This is a tour you MUST take upon arrival. The hour-long tour (actually, closer to 70-75 minutes) was the perfect way to get oriented to our surroundings, find out some very interesting facts, get the insight into places we wanted to visit later, and see things we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. The guide (Alistair) is amusing as well as informative. Our family consisted of 2 adults (one a non-native English speaker, and one a native English speaker, but not UK English) and our two children ages 7 and 10. Alistair’s prose was easily understood by all and kept both the adults and children engaged. There are no extra fees (college visitor entry fees, for example) and Alistair doesn’t advertise the tour as “Free” then hit you up for ‘donations’ or put a guilt trip on you at the end for tips. The free map and discount card came in handy later in our trip. Alistair also warns patrons about what they can expect in certain visitor sights which do have entry fees where people may want to visit on their own later (Harry Potter fans- I’m talking about you). I will take this tour again the next time I’m in Oxford, as I understand it can change based on which colleges happen to be open to the public at certain dates/ times.
