This is a tour you MUST take upon arrival. The hour-long tour (actually, closer to 70-75 minutes) was the perfect way to get oriented to our surroundings, find out some very interesting facts, get the insight into places we wanted to visit later, and see things we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. The guide (Alistair) is amusing as well as informative. Our family consisted of 2 adults (one a non-native English speaker, and one a native English speaker, but not UK English) and our two children ages 7 and 10. Alistair’s prose was easily understood by all and kept both the adults and children engaged. There are no extra fees (college visitor entry fees, for example) and Alistair doesn’t advertise the tour as “Free” then hit you up for ‘donations’ or put a guilt trip on you at the end for tips. The free map and discount card came in handy later in our trip. Alistair also warns patrons about what they can expect in certain visitor sights which do have entry fees where people may want to visit on their own later (Harry Potter fans- I’m talking about you). I will take this tour again the next time I’m in Oxford, as I understand it can change based on which colleges happen to be open to the public at certain dates/ times.

We pre-booked the tour via the website, really enjoyed it, as did our 4 Children, Alasdair, the guide was a fountain of knowledge, but also made it funny and entertaining, our 5 year old was as engrossed as our 12 yo! . We also had the added bonus of a 'private tour' as no one else booked with us, this was great for us but a shame for Alasdair as a lot of the other tours were full (and did not seem as good!!) Excellent value for money.

Alasdair is a really likeable and knowledgeable guide. We had a lovely evening and really enjoyed our learning experience, and a few beers. It was a fun way to check out Oxford at night.

2 hour walking tour of Oxford. Small Group. Reasonable Price. Free tours have too many people. Guide wore a large Alice in Wonderland Top Hat and was easy to follow. Well worth the time.
