The Galaxie Hotel is located in Summertown (several restaurants, many grocery stores, banks, a Starbucks are all within a 2 minute walk). Although the hotel is about a 30 minute walk from Oxford's city centre, there is a bus stop just outside the hotel for quick access to the city. The double room we stayed in was very cute, had plenty of room, and was updated with a flat screen tv, wood floors and modern bathroom. The breakfast area is really nice and is open as a lounge area throughout the day. The breakfast spread offered croissants (plain and chocolate), toast, freshly squeezed orange juice, cereals, coffee, and a full-English-breakfast buffet. It was very yummy and clearly the favourite part of my stay (nevermind the extensive beauty and history of Oxford!). The members of staff were friendly and helpful, and the wifi was free and reliable.

We were given a voucher for a picnic cruise on the Thames for our 25th Wedding anniversary. In order to make the most of the experience (i.e the wine), we decided to book a local hotel and stay the night. We pre-arranged with the hotel that we could leave our car in the car park for the day, the receptionist was helpful with advice about buses, but we decided to stroll into Oxford centre (about 25 minutes). We checked into the hotel later in the day. Our room was in the area being redeveloped, but apart from the landing being a bit unsightly and dusty it was not a problem. However our room was at the front and there was quite a lot of noise from the road outside. The facilities in the room were fine, although not the best quality, and the room was clean and comfortable. There were a number of bars, restaurants and shops close to the hotel, so there was no need to venture back into Oxford in the evening. The breakfast room is lovely, as were the staff, and there was a good choice for breakfast.

The hotel is divided into two sections, one of which is under construction. The result is that one side has a lift with no stairs, and the other side has stairs but no lift. This is a frightening fire hazard on the side with only a lift. The very caring, but disorganized and ill-informed receptionist - Joyce - said "don't worry - there won't be a fire!".

Breakfast was very good, but the bread beside the toaster sits on a countertop, and many of the open food baskets do not have tongs - both these conditions welcome bacteria.

The ongoing renovation noise all day long was unbearable, and the workers were playing a radio at full blast. We had to ask the front desk to get them to turn the music down. A classic case of reactive, rather than proactive, management of the hotel. Too bad, because the staff in both the dining room and the front desk seem to care.

Many areas reeked of a noxious cleaning agent, there was no information to be had at the front desk (I witnessed one customer being sent away with the admonition to check the hotel's website for info!!).

We were fortunate to have a room at the back - essential for sleep. Also had a good-sized bathroom, although the shower is unusable - very small and with only an overhead spray. Impossible to wash anything other than the top of one's head. We will never stay at the Galaxie again.

Stayed here on business for 2 nights. The hotel is situated about half way down Banbury Road. My room was on the ground floor situated to the front of the hotel facing the road. It was very spacious with a desk, double bed and fire place! It's true that I was woken quite early in the morning from the noise outside but I needed to be up early anyway so wasn't much of an issue. The noise didn't disturb me at all during the night. Breakfast was nice and there were plenty of things to choose from. Staff were helpful and friendly. For the purpose of my visit this hotel was more than adequate.

Room Tip: Maybe a room away from the road would be best but they may also be the smaller ones. Just ask.

We recently stayed one night at the Galaxie. We had rooms in the front and it was extremely noisy. People partying all night, yelling and slamming car doors in front car park. The room next door had the TV on all night and we could here everything. Shower leaked into the room below, management called us and told us to stop taking a shower! When I told housekeeping I still needed to shower, they said they would find a room that I could shower in. Luckily we had friends next door so I showered in their room. They advertised a lift, which took you to the floor but then there were still three steps down and 7-8 steps up to where the rooms were. My 86 year old mother was with us, so this was a hardship. Reception area was rarely manned, but there was a phone you could call on at the desk. We could only have one key per room. The manager was defensive about the noise and the leak. Said that he had never had a problem with a shower before, insinuating it was our fault. Said that double windows wouldn't help the noise and said something about living in London and how noisy it was even with double windows? Reception knew nothing about area-buses etc. On the plus side, the breakfast room was very pretty, breakfast selection and quality was good. Housekeeping staff were helpful. The manager did give us a small discount on the rooms due to the trouble. He was also very kind to my elderly mother in the breakfast room, helping her with her tray etc. The young woman who was working at reception tried to be helpful, did make us dinner reservations and called us a cab. She was a little frazzled. They also allowed us to leave luggage there for the day. This could be a nice hotel with some changes. The decor in the hallways and in the breakfast room is nice. The staff and even the manager are friendly, just somewhat disorganized. The decor in the rooms was ok but very modern and the rooms are really small.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back might be quieter, but there is still a car park back there.

As others have mentioned, it is incredibly noisy. Both from inside and outside the hotel. I had a small single room overlooking the main Banbury Road. Sleep was quite difficult to come by.

Room was tiny, small single bed tucked into the corner, bathroom so small that I couldn't use the toilet without bashing my legs on the wall directly in front.

On the plus side though, room was nicely decorated and breakfast wasn't bad. However, the noise is more than enough to put me off ever staying there again.

Room Tip: Insist on a room away from the main road

Stayed a few days. Excellent, modern and well appointed, good staff and breakfast. Especially liked the conservatory/garden. Free car parking and loads of buses into the city. Only downside is the busy Banbury Road but Given the location, convenience and quality I can forgive this.

Room Tip: The back is going to be quieter
