This was a last minute booking for an overnight stay to spend time with friends in the City. For this reason we were not looking for somewhere which would provide us with a special experience, but rather for a pleasant clean room at an economical price. Having read the Trip advisor reviews the Manor House Hotel appeared to fit the bill and as we were booked to have Sunday lunch at the Magdalen Arms which is just opposite the hotel, it seemed ideal. Should you decide to stay here then a meal at the latter establishment would be an inspired choice.
The Manor House Hotel appears to be run by a Greek family. Mama registered us and was warm and welcoming, we were immediately struck by the cleanliness of the place, and this was notable throughout the building. We were allocated a double room (R5) on the second floor – note there is no lift available and some of the stairs are quite steep. The room overlooked Iffley Road and there was some traffic noise but with the windows closed it was perfectly OK.
The Manor House Hotel will not be winning any design awards, just one word "woodchip" will set the scene!. The decor is dated but fresh, the artworks must surely appeal to somebody and are of the sentimental bucolic scene variety with a few icons thrown in for good measure. The furnishings however were sturdy, the bed very comfortable and linen spotless. The bathroom provided a shower rather than a bath, but as the water flow was strong the overall experience was positive.
Papa appeared to be servicing the kitchen and dining room for breakfast. A man of few words, he cooked a decent breakfast and we had what is somewhat unusual in the UK – smoked bacon – yum. The menu is basic – no buffet and we were not offered a choice of toast – white sliced was provided. Coffee was somewhat weak and might possibly have been instant served cunningly in a pot. The large dining room was somewhat gloomy but overlooked a large and very well tended garden.
At check out Mama indicated that our bill would be £99. We questioned this as we had been quoted £90 on booking – there was no quibble and £90 was paid. This hotel is rated 2 star by the AA. I have stayed in worse 3 star establishments. If all you want is a decent room a comfortable clean bed and a basic breakfast all at a price which is very reasonable for Oxford then this hotel will meet your requirements more than adequately

Room Tip: Rear rooms will be quieter

As a tourist from the United States I was excited to visit Oxford, as I have heard many great things about the history of the city. Being unfamiliar with the area I began to search the internet to seek out affordable and decent accommodation for my stay. What I found was that the closer the stay to City Center the higher the cost. As such I wound up reserving rooms at a bed and breakfast, which is common for this area, and I wound up extremely disappointed upon arrival.

I had booked lodging at 'The Nanford House' bed and breakfast and the accommodations were absolutely unacceptable at almost every standard from cleanliness to the service. Being distraught my family and I set out to find other lodging and were referred to the Manor House Hotel by a local Pizzeria owner. It was literally a life saver, the women in the family were VERY happy, and as was I.

Once we explained our situation to the staff they were more than understanding and went out of their way to help us transfer our luggage and get situated. The rooms were clean, the breakfast was tasty, and the rates were more affordable.

Short and sweet:

1) Affordable
2) Great Location:
less than half a mike from city center
3) Bus Stop right outside of Hotel
4) Service is outstanding and pleasant
5) Very CLEAN

Tasteful, spotless, comfortable, run by a family who put the needs of their guests before anything else. Very conveniently placed - five minutes drive into the city and five minutes in the other direction to the hospitals. Breakfast was delicious and facing french windows leading into a large quiet garden. Excellent value for money and would not now stay anywhere else when visiting Oxford.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlooking the garden are quiet.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for our anniversary.
We had a great time. The hotel is 5 minutes away from a park and ride into oxford town centre which is really handy.
The building is gorgeous and very grand with huge well kept gardens.
The staff are lovely and very professional.
Would defiantly go back here if fancied a romantic country break.

Room Tip: We stayed in a superior room in the main hotel

We stayed for 2 nights in Manor House Hotel in December 2011. We had no reservation, found the staff extremely friendly and helpful and we got an excellent rate well below the advertised price because they weren't offering breakfast. We got to visit all the available rooms and pick the one we wanted. So we chose a large room with big bay windows over the road, hoping it wouldn't be too noisy which it wasn't. The room had a nice flat screen TV with many channels, typical English style kettle and stuff for tea and coffee, and a large, clean bathroom. We also saw rooms that had a smaller, closet style bathroom with just a shower and the sink in the room, but we preferred a larger bathroom with bathtub/shower.
It's true the decoration isn't very modern or particularly my style, but I find English accomodation is generally like this, with carpets everywhere and decoration from the 60s, so this hotel is in the line of typical English accomodation, as well as clean, warm and comfortable.
The hotel is not in the centre of Oxford, but a 20 minute walk or an under 5 minute bus ride from the centre, with a bus stop right outside the door included in many bus routes. Considering other B&Bs and hotels we checked out this was by FAR the best price/quality-wise. Oxford is ridiculously expensive.
