“Overpriced and bland”
Reviewed September 25, 2011

We stayed here for one night. We were given a large room on the second floor annex which was very clean but there was not even one picture on the walls. The stairs up to the room were steep and my 84 year old mum had to go downstairs backways:) It was a bit chilly so we turned on the heating which heated the room to sauna temperature into about 5 minutes and there did not seem to be a medium setting. The room was out onto the street and was really noisy due to the pub opposite until well after midnight.
Breakfast was in an old fashioned large dining room oprning up to a pretty garden and was okay apart from the coffee which was plain awful. The owmers were friendly.
I just think that for £89.00 a night for a double there should be a bit more on offer than a clean room.

As our original choice of hotel had double booked our rooms, the lady there suggested we stay at the Manor House and she would pay the difference. We booked a family room for the 3 of us and a twin room for my parents as we were all attending a wedding in Oxford. Our room was in the annexe, with a man fixing up his car in front of our front door dressed in greasy overalls with tools all over the place. We had to climb up a very steep flight of stairs to a room overlooking the busy Iffley Road - non-stop traffic day and night. Windows did not open sufficiently to provide a means of escape in case of emergency. The room and bedding were clean, but those are the only positives. The whole place is tired and run-down, with no attention to detail and a totally un-cohesive, depressing style of decor mainly based on Russian-style icons. Creepy. Our bedding consisted of a mattress topper in a duvet cover with a separate sheet. All spotless, but what's wrong with duvets?! 3 of us in a family room with towels provided for 2 people, also 2 cups and saucers instead of 3. Curtains failed to block out light as the curtain rail didn't extend beyond the windows. Lights in all areas inadequate and bulbs not all working. Had to wait a good 10 minutes for the toilet cistern to re-fill. Despite returning in the evening and sitting next to the so-called bar, no-one bothered to ask if we'd like a drink and there is no restaurant as claimed on their website. Our bathroom smelt permanently damp, the shower curtain afforded no privacy. No toiletries provided apart from a tiny, cheap bar of soap. There was no lock on the bathroom door and no bath mat for safety. The shower lacked power. Breakfast was unimaginative and made with the cheapest ingredients possible. Public rooms made me feel nauseous with the smell of cleaning products and cooking. Surroundings depressing. There was a hopeful looking array of tourist information leaflets in the corridor, none of any use if you're staying in Oxford. No maps available, just lots of takeaway menus for local businesses and leaflets about attractions in the New Forest approx 2 hours drive away. The rack rate for our room was £130 which I thought extortionate. Not enough parking spaces provided for 15 rooms - 7 spaces at most. You guessed it, we were blocked in the morning we left.

We had a lovely three nights stay in the manor house hotel, which is suitably located on a 10 minutes walking distance from the city center with all the colleges.

The room was lovely with a good bath room (althou the shower could be better located (to the side of the bath and very low (for average hight people) with not enough water pressure to reach the middle of the bath tub.
The bed was excellent and we could make a late night tea every evening. No disturbing sounds of traffic in this room (no 2)

The area in Oxford was very nice with nice pubs were wehad a decent meal on one night and a good beer in the "garden" the other night.

Breakfast was ok (though no buffet), but managment aptly provided us with all requirements of our dietary wishes. The room for breakfast bordered a very prety garden with lovely playful cats. Staff was not very well english spoken but helpful and patient.

We paid £88/night for a double room, no 7. Expensive for the quality of accommodation, but quite good value for Oxford. The hotel is 10 minutes from the centre. Over the road is a good foodie pub, The Magdalene Arms. Down that same road a hip but jolly pub, The Rusty Bicycle.

The reception was good, the manager was being courteous and helpful to a deaf woman when we arrived.

The room was an adequate size - up a lot of stairs. Didn't bother me, an issue for some. Clean, recently painted, but the decor was mismatched and quite old and tired. On arrival, no kettle and only 1 cup, no TV remote. Quickly rectified by pleasant manager, but should have already been done. Likewise, on the last morning, the toilet flush broke, was quickly 'mended', but not tested and broke again 2 minutes later.

The rest of the hotel was nice; the breakfast room is quite pleasant, and there'sa nice big garden with frolicsome cats.

Breakfast was an inch of fruit juice, bowl of cereal, okay coffee, 1 sad catering sausage, 2 rashers, 1 egg, handful of mushrooms, a quarter tomato, toast and jam. No buffet, no real choices.

The staff are all friendly and helpful, and on Saturday night gave the four of us a beer on the house while they played boules in the garden and we played cards; most agreeable.

In short, good atmosphere, location and staff offset by tired rooms and skimpy breakfast.

This is our 5th year staying at the Manor House. It is clean, quite, reasonably priced and in a nice neighborhood convenient to downtown Oxford. Oxford's downtown with all te colleges is beautiful, but swarming with tourists. The Manor House is about a 10 -15 minute walk or a 3-5 minute bus ride. It is nice to be in a real neighborhood to enjoy many ethnic restaurants, pleasant neighborhood streets and houses, good pubs, with easy access to what everyone visits Oxford for. Rooms on the back of the house are extremely quiet. Good breakfast, very nice owners and a good value.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms at the back of the house, which are very quiet with no street noise.

I stayed at the Manor House Hotel this month for a total of 4 nights while I took my exams in Oxford. I had previously stayed at the Premier Inn in Oxford for a mock exam and had a horrible experience - the hotel was miles from town (which meant an expensive taxi journey there and back), the room was unbearably hot, it was noisy and the staff weren't the friendliest. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Manor House Hotel is the complete opposite! The lady who runs the hotel (I'm sorry I never caught her name) was so incredibly kind, giving me words of support the morning before each exam - I'm sure she could tell how nervous I was - and was extremely accommodating of my 'unique' situation. The room I stayed in was very clean and comfortable and, despite being on Iffley Road, noise from traffic outside was hardly noticeable. Breakfast was great too. I'd definitely recommend a stay at the Manor House Hotel over any of the big name hotels - it's cheaper, cleaner and the hospitality of its staff was first class. Thanks for all your support, Manor House Hotel!

On the positive side, the owners were very friendly and helpful. We had the full English breakfast each day, which was very good - just enough to set us up for the day without being stuffed! The rooms were clean with fresh towels every day. The location is very handy - being near a great selection of restaurants (on Cowley Road) and pubs (for example, The Fir Tree, Iffley Road). There is a bus stop directly outside and we never waited more than a minute for a bus to the centre. On the negative side, it is necessary to take the bus in as the walk is a tad long. The decor is very dated looking although it doesn't seem to be that old. My main quibble is that it is over-priced at £89 a night but that seems to be par for the course in Oxford. Overall, a very good option location-wise. Being near Cowley Rd is great - you can eat and have a couple of drinks there then walk home in the evening. Price and decor just prevent me from giving it 4 stars, otherwise good.
