“A great church with a view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Whilst on a visit to Oxford we noticed people at the top of the tower & went to investigate. The £3 fee to climb the tower is well worth paying which also helps with the upkeep of the church. There is no health & safety overkill here as you make your way up the tower steps which the last part is a narrow stone spiral staircase. Once you reach the top the open views across the city are unsurpassed. You can view from all four sides of the tower and spend as much time as you want looking out. But be warned there is 127 steps to the top. and the same back down !

“Superb church with unrivalled views from the tower”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

A lot of people visit this church to climb the tower and/or visit the cafe, but if you just want to see the church there is no charge. It is a lovely grade 1 listed building with many points of interest and a fine musical tradition. Look at their excellent website for further details of visiting arrangements and tours, not to mention services and concerts.

The tower climb (127 narrow steps) is highly recommended (if you're reasonably fit!) and is to be preferred to Carfax Tower. It is currently £3 for an adult, but there are also family tickets for £10 and an under 16 rate of £2.50. There are fine views in all directions but particularly of Radcliffe Square, the Radcliffe Camera, Brasenose College and All Souls College.

There is a separate tripadvisor entry for the cafe (The Vaults & Garden Coffee shop at St Mary...etc) so I won't review that here, apart from saying that you can enjoy a drink, snack, or meal in the cafe that occupies the building of Oxford University’s old congregation house, built in 1320. You can either enjoy breakfast, lunch and tea under the cafe’s vaulted ceilings or in the churchyard’s garden, which has an unrivalled and privileged view of Radcliffe Square and The Radcliffe Camera, as mentioned above.

“Great Views from the Top”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

We loved this Church, especially the trip to the top of the tower for stunning views of Oxford. Not good for those who don't like winding little steps and a bit of exercise, but it is worth it when you get to the top.
