I am lucky enough to get to Oxford a couple of times a year, and each time I always make a beeline for the L&F - slightly away from the main town area but worth it.
The atmosphere is always perfect - no juke box, no fruit machines - just beer and conversation.
The cellar is well kept, and I would second the previous comments on Old Peculiar.

Food is basic, but tasty and generous e.g. the ploughman's salad comes with a choice of two 'proteins' e.g. pork pie or Stilton or ham (nice and thick).

Staff are friendly, polite, chatty and service is nice and quick.

Finally, a nice twist is that all profits from the pub go to providing scholarships for graduate students - effectively every pint sold goes to helping a student's education.

I'll just keep on going back.

This is the ONLY pub in Oxford that has Theakston's Old Peculiar on tap. And this is the best real ale in the world. and I'm not biased, honest. It's dark and smooth and malty with only light hops so that it is not bitter. However, I would recommend that you limit yourself to no more than two pints unless you have a strong friend to help you get home.

Entering the Lamb and Flag is a step back in time, this is an authentic building which dates back to the 15th century and has many historic features, including an impressive medieval fireplace. There are several rooms, that at the front has a Georgian feel with a view of St Giles, while the back rooms are earlier.

The food is not outstanding but represents good value for money, the whole point of going to the pub is for the varied selection of well kept beer and interesting ciders. The pub claims connections to the Inklings, J. R.R.Tolkien, C. S.Lewis, Lord David Cecil etc and Inspector Morse so you are in good company.

This nice pub is on Woodstock Road and convenient to Somerville, Keble and St. John's colleges. It's a short walk from city centre. It's slightly more upscale and much cleaner than the neighboring pubs. It attracts a quieter and slightly more mature crowd. It also seems to have a more local clientele and fewer tourists.
The Lamb and Flag seems warm and convivial without been too touristy or uproarious.

The pub had character and an excellent range of beers. However the barman / (owner?) had a take it or leave it attitude.
The food was a disappointment with a tasteless quiche and average ploughmans lunch.
