“Another world”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

As soon as you enter the grounds it is like being in another world. The buildings are attractive but mainly shut to the public. The walk around the Deer Park is lovely. It is easy walking with several seats for admiring the view. The river is on one side; the park on the other. There are several opportunities to see the deer.

The only let down was the coffee shop selling drinks in paper cups with the water coming from a machine. The choice of refreshments could be much improved.

“Beautiful Halls, Gardens, and Walk along the Cherwell”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Fantastic walking the steps of Tolkien and Lewis (Addison's Walk, along the Cherwell), watching punters on the Cherwell. A perfect afternoon's activity.

“Great place for a walk in a park”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

This collage is a beautiful place with a lovely quiet park with deer living there but the admission is quite expensive ( Adult £5) for what it offers. The collage itself is an interesting and worth visiting. There is a coffee shop with some tables on the terrace with the view on the bridge on the High Street and the river.

“Historical Architecture and Peaceful Gardens”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

Magdalen College deservedly has a reputation as one of the most beautiful colleges in Oxford, combining historical architecture with peaceful gardens.

Entering through the Porter’s lodge into St John’s Quadrangle, be sure to look up and take in the numerous creatures decorating the top of the chapel, the architect must have had some strange nightmares !

The Chaplain’s Quad features a modern statue which is apparently Christ with Mary Magdalen although it could easily be mistaken for 2 aliens from a sci-fi film…..

The Cloisters reminded me of the scene from Chariots of Fire, where Harald Abrahams runs around the square in the time it takes the clock to strike 12. However, that was supposed to be Trinity College, Cambridge and I believe was filmed at Eton !

We also took a quick look at the Hall, with busts of Lord Denning and Oscar Wilde on opposite walls. This is now used as the student refectory so it was a good job we visited during off-term time rather than disturbing the students’ lunch !

We didn’t visit the Café but noticed it is possible to sit outside by the water

The impressive Chapel and the memorial plaques for the College members killed in the First World War give pause for thought.

Then, crossing the Cherwell via a small bridge leads you to Addison’s Walk and the meadow where the Deer were happily grazing. Note that from July to December the deer are not actually in The Grove ( Deer Park ) but on another part of the estate……

On a hot day our walk along the river was mostly in shade and so it was very pleasant. Looking back to the college also gives a good view of the Great Tower, which is one of Oxford’s most familiar landmarks.

Returning back to the main buildings, there is a huge old tree to the left of the “New Building” which apparently has been there since 1801. It certainly is one of the widest trees I’ve ever seen

Entrance to Magdalen College is 5 GBP and I thought this was tremendous value.

“One of the most beautiful and unusual colleges with deer park and lovely river walk”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Being a member of Oxford University and having visited all the colleges, I can assert that Magdalen is one of the richest, biggest and most beautiful colleges, with fantastic Gothic architecture and a large number of different buildings, including a beautiful chapel. In addition, Magdalen has the unusual advantage of owning extensive grounds, including a deer park and secluded Addison's Walk, where you can go for a 20 minute walk in the beautiful quiet of the river. A college tour you cannot miss
