“Historic literary site and awsome accomadations to boot!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2013

I was in oxford in march 2013 as part of my dream trip to England. I had chosen oxford because I am a fan of the Inklings,( C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and friends.) The Eastgate Hotel, now managed by Mercure, is the place Where Lewis Met his Wife Joy Greshom and indeed proposed to her. He also lunched there with Tolkien on occasion. The Hotel is conveniently situated right by many of the best College buildings, it is right near the bridge at Magdalene College. It offers free WiFi, and it's Breakfast is suppurb. The dining area feels like a very fancy resteraunt indeed. It's staff are very friendly and highly professional, and the Rooms are cofortable, fully up to date, and well maintained. I Highly recommend this establishment. Also not to be missed nearby, there is a store selling Games and novelties of all sorts right next door to the hotel. (I bought a reproduction Victorian pack of Happy Families cards there) and the St. Andrew's Christian Bookstore.down the block. The Mercure Eastgate is also conveinent to the Martyr's memorial, The Eagle and Child Pub, and River Walks such as those seen on the Detectivce Shows "Lewis", "Morse" and "Endevour" Actually most of these sites can be reached from the hotel in less than 15 minutes walk. This is important as driving in Oxford is a little bit of a pain. Being a college town,it's streets at rush hour can be quite busy, but walking there is usually pretty easy. ,

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a double even if traveling alone.

My wife and I spent two nights at the Mercure in August of this year - the location was great, the room was clean and comfortable, the air conditioner worked really well, and the atmosphere of the hotel was very nice. The breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was terrific and filling, so it was a great way to start the day. Our only complaint was the shower, which had a hand held shower head, with nowhere to hang it up so that it would be above your head. The wi-fi worked really well, which is also a bonus. For the price, the location cannot be beat, and we'd be happy to stay here again.

I stayed here with my family whilst in Oxford on a short break. The hotel was perfectly situation in the city centre and was next to the Botanical Gardens it was also surrounded my many of the colleges. Our room was excellently presented on arrival and although I was sleeping on the sofa bed, I had the best night sleep ever. We ate in the restaurant whilst staying and the food was delicious especailly the breakfasts where were cooked to order and the smoked Haddock was delightful. In general the hotel had a warm friendly atmosphere, I would highly recommend this hotel as a superb city centre hotel.

We stayed here for one night in late July 2013. Our room was large and overlooked High Street. Very comfortable. The included breakfast was a welcome change from the usual fare. We will return when we get back to Oxford. Highly recommended due to value for the location.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The rooms are modest in size, but the building has a lot of character and I was very comfortable here during my two night stay. The washroom in my room was large and very clean. The room had AC which was a welcome bonus in the summer heat. The staff were very friendly offering tips and suggestions for how to spend my free time. The best thing about this hotel was the location. High Street is in the core of the city which means you can explore most things on foot easily from this location. The hop-on hop-off tourist bus also stops very near to the hotel making this an easy way to get to and from the hotel to all of the city's main tourist attractions. There are lots of coffee shops and bistros less than a block away where you can grab a snack or meal.

Recently I stayed at the Mercure Eastgate in Oxford. The location is superb in the immediate vicinity of High Street and not far from the town centre. The price is appropriately higher. To start with the positives: I found the staff very helpful and accommodating and trying to genuinely help their guests. The breakfast choice was wide. Things that let the Eastgate down are several: 1. the airconditioning facilities- in my room the airconditioning did not sufficiently control the temperature, fortunately it was not too hot and an open window cooled the room down at night. 2. the rooms- my room was small, looked out over some airconditioning ducts with accomanying noise, further there was a water stain in the ceiling that had been there for some time by the look of it. 3. Interior- aged carpets, fake bookwalls as wall paper. 4. I did not like the Hollandaise, which looked and tasted as if it had come from a tin.

Dear Middle_Park Traveller

Thank you for your feedback in relation to your visit to the Mercure Eastgate Hotel.

Firstly let me apologise for shortcomings you experienced whilst staying with us. All of your points highlighted will be addressed as soon as possible.

I was particularly pleased to read that you found the staff helpful and genuine in their efforts to assist our guests.
In addition I was glad that you found the location of the hotel superb, albeit as you correctly say our tariffs may be slightly higher because of our location, but once at the hotel there are no further travel costs you would have experienced staying out of town, whilst visiting the city.

Thank you again for your feed back

Kind Regards
