“Comfortable with quiet location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012

Stayed here on a Saturday night to meet up with some friends. We arrived very early afternoon and there were plenty of parking spaces available. We were warmly welcomed by the receptionist who was chatty and helpful with information about nearby places to eat and she recommended the Isis pub.We were offered help with our luggage but we didn't have much to carry in but it was nice to have the offer. Our room was situated on the first floor and a lift was available. The room was very spacious and clean with plenty of seating and a large comfortable bed. The bathroom was very pleasant and clean also. Our friends room was not ready so they were able to leave their luggage in our room and sit down for a cup of tea and there were plenty of teas, coffees, milks and biscuits in the room for us. There is a pleasant stroll into the centre of Oxford along the river bank which took us around half an hour. There were two pubs en route and we called into the Isis pub for a (large)tasty lunch snack. There is also a bus service that runs close to the hotel with regular buses into Oxford that costs around £2 for a single. We booked a taxi back to the hotel later in the evening and it cost around £10. We made it back to the hotel before they stopped taking food orders at 10pm. We ordered a bread and olive oil starter which I thought came with pitta bread as stated in the menu but the pitta bread didn't arrive. When I asked the waiter, there seemed to be a misprint in the menu and we were given the pitta bread. Although the food was good, it was quite pricey for what it was and the portions were fairly small. There seemed to be a problem with the heating in the room as it was very warm at night and I couldn't sleep with the heat in the room very well. I did open the window but it remained hot in the room and the thermostat wasn't working. The breakfast was very nice the next day and we were served a full English with plenty of toast in a rack and there was a buffet available with cereals, yoghurt's, fruit and pastries etc. The waiter service was very efficient and tables were quickly cleared and tidied. Apart from the hot bedroom we had a lovely stay at this hotel and would certainly be back again.

Oxford is an inspiring town. One travels to this lovely place and can't pretend not to be influenced by the quiet atmosphere you can breathe in any corner...
Hawkwell House Hotel is designed to meet these requirements. A wonderful quiet location, nice rooms, simple yet well maintained gardens. Very nice staff. Good restaurant. Free internet at a good speed. A quite pleasant place. One of these places you feel you'll return!
To improve: the continental breakfast (this is a quite english hotel actually!)

We stayed here for one night to meet up with some friends and have a pub crawl around the city of Oxford. Our friends got here before us and were able to check into their room, unfortunatley our room was still being cleaned but we were able to do the paperwork and leave our luggage in our friends room until later that night.

The hotel is situated up a drive in Iffley village, so is very peaceful and yet not far from Oxford. We walked up the towpath and then caught a taxi back, which including a tip cost £10.00.

We came back to the hotel just before 10pm and managed to just get an order in for food at the bar, three of us ordered lamb curry and although it seemed a bit cool in temperature, it was very tasty. The hotel didn't seem to serve draught ales, as far as I can remember, but we they did have bottles of Oxford Ales.

We picked up our room key at Reception.
The room was of a good size, with three chairs, desk space and a coffee table. The bed was very comfortable, a Tempura mattress, our room was on the ground floor so it didn't seem very secure to leave the window open at night, it was very hot and although we turned the heater off, it didn't cool down. When I mentioned it, the receptionist said there was something wrong with the plumbing. The ensuite seemed fairly newly decorated, with a good powerful shower.
Despite the heat and stuffiness of the room we did sleep fairly well.

Breakfast was quite good, I expected a buffett, but the only help yourself items were orange juice, cereal, Yoghurt, fruit, some cold meat and cheese and Danish Pastries. A waiter took our orders for cooked breakfast and served us with toast and coffee or tea. The coffee was good.

The staff were all very well trained and polite and friendly.

We were able to leave our car in the car park, walk into town again and then catch a bus back, the Rose Hill, number 3 bus, we caught it just opposite the Central Library/ Westgate Shopping Centre, singles cost £1.90.

The only slightly negative aspect to the hotel was the fact that the bedrooms were so hot, I was suprised there was no Air Con.

We went for a two night stay over half term, taking advantage of the special offer of 2 nights B&B plus a substantial contribution towards a meal on one of the evenings and a free box of chocolates.
The hotel is set in a quiet suburban area near to the southern end of the ring road, so is easy to get to. It's much bigger than we expected, the photographs on the internet showing just the old building and not the considerable modern extensions to the rear. It was clear from all the advertising literature in reception that the hotel is strongly targeting the corporate, conference and wedding market. All the staff we met, with the exception of one foreign waiter in the restaurant who appeared to be living on another planet, were friendly, courteous and helpful, and had clearly been very well trained. The hotel is decorated to a good standard, in a modern, light and airy manner, and the standard of our first floor room was excellent with a very comfortable bed, spacious bathroom, small table with two chairs and a small sofa. Cleanliness was excellent.
On the first evening we eat in the hotel restaurant, and had a pleasant and acceptable meal served by a friendly, young waitress. Our reaction to the meal was much influenced by the price we were paying - as our deal meant that we contributed only 30% of the total of the bill, we were quite happy. Had we not been on a special package and had we been asked to pay the full price of the bill, we would have felt that very differently. Breakfast was excellent, and it was nice to have several choices of dishes in addition to the standard 'Full English'.
As with anything, there were a few niggles (perhaps we watch too much 'Hotel Inspector' on the television!). Despite having a spacious and modern bathroom, there was insufficent space to set out a washing bag and toiletries. Strangely, the wardrobe recess in the room had no doors or curtains to cover it. We much enjoyed viewing the contents of the waste skip neatly tucked under our first floor window, and reviewing the hotel's dirty bedding which was stacked for a good part of the day in the corridor a few yards from our door. On the other hand, we did enjoy our chocolates, once we had reminded the receptionist that they were included in the deal and they'd been delivered to our room.
The location of the hotel is a big plus point. It's just ten minutes walk from Iffley lock on the Thames, and on our first afternoon we took a walk down to see the river. On an autumn afternoon we had it all to ourselves, but the signs are that it can be very busy during the summer season. All the locals we met were friendly, and we called in at 'The Prince of Wales' on the way back, where the barmaid invited me to sample all five of their excellent real ales.
Easy access to Oxford is another advantage. It's impossible to get into the centre of Oxford by private transport, but the hotel is just three minutes walk from a bus stop, were a service every 5 yto 10 mins with deliver you into the centre of the city in about 15 mins. Although there are a lot of tourist services and attracions that you can book and pay for, we found it possible to spend a very interesting day by just going into the centre and exploring.
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay at the Hawkwell House Hotel. Our final comment is that being a company run business, it does lack the sort of personal touch which you would expect to find in a family or proprietor run establishment.

Room Tip: Ring the hotel directly for the best rooms and deals.

Although not small, Hawkwell House has a cosy warm feel, and I enjoyed an overnight stay there. The bedrooms have all been recently refurbished, my double bed was huge and comfortable and the bathroom very modern with a big bath and basin
I ate dinner in the restaurant and the staff were very attentive and my meal excellent. Breakfast is a great selection of cold and hot options and endless coffee!
I particularly liked that although the location in Iffley Village was quiet, it was a 10 minute stroll down to the river and a very pleasant 45 minute walk along the towpath into Oxford City. If a quicker journey is needed the bus is near and frequent, so your car can be left in the hotel carpark for the duration of your stay. It is no problem at all to leave it there for the remainder of your day after check out to continue your day in the City
Highly recommeded for a leisure stay as well as a venue for a wedding or conference as the entertainment rooms and the grounds are spacious

Room Tip: There was lovely afternoon sun in my room which looked out over the garden to Elm House and I sat an...

Everything about our stay from check in to check out was brilliant ! We stayed on their autumn offer which includes DBB and handmade chocolates ( seriously yummy ! ) and this represented terrific value . The hotel rang me the night before my arrival to check I had received confirmation emails and to confirm times for dinner which was a nice touch . We arrived ridiculously early as we wanted to go into Oxford ( a couple of miles away ) and the friendly receptionist said we could check into our room and ordered us a taxi .. Nothing seems too much trouble ! Our room was lovely and warm and spotlessly clean with lovely modern fittings ! Dinner in the restaurant was amazing with very efficient service as was breakfast . We can't wait to go back !
