The Pub and Restaurant have been completely renovated, and now serve stunning, largely British food, in stylish surroundings. The nine residential rooms are now open and are receiving great reviews. Visited for Sunday lunch. A genuine, old-fashioned, traditional, unspoilt pub. Limited menu, but good roast meals -excellent beef.Very small, so if there's more than four of you, you'll struggle to get seated. Worth a visit for a meal or a drink just to see what a REAL pub is like, most of them are gone.

Previous tripadvisor reviewers had brought The Bear and Ragged Staff to our attention as a possible location for a small family get together and it was superb. We were not looking for a hotel or pub with rooms but a real country inn and we were not disappointed. Within the 16th century listed building the recently constructed rooms of the Landlords Wing are modern and well equipped - how many hotels boast a his/hers shower with two individually controlled showerheads? The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive, the restaurant menu was extensive (NOT expensive), the food was excellent and the wine list was good. The breakfasts served the following morning were the icing on the cake. Can't recommend it too highly

We were recommended here by the B&B owners where we were staying, and were somewhat disappointed. Whilst the surroundings and atmosphere were pleasant enough, the menu was somewhat pretentious. Most of the dishes had an extra ‘quirky’ something added to it, with the exception of the fish and chips, which was the only one without anything ‘extra’. I like to have my cod skinned, but this came with the skin on which, considering the establishment, should have been removed. A choice of a few good pub dishes would have been nice, especially eating in the bar area as opposed to the restaurant.

Visiting the bear and ragged staff is every bit as frustrating as watching Laura Robson play tennis. It promises brilliance on an inspiring menu whilst taking it away with silly errors in the cooking. The chorizo scotch eggs probably sum up the experience, of the pair one a mouthful of oozing yolky perfection the second over boiled and rather less inspiring. The fish stew was served without its sauce, the brownie was dry served with ice cream soup and the meringue promised crumble but came with a desultory sprinkling of something on raspberries. The rest was unbelievably bloody brilliant! It's almost as if the place is staff entirely by sleepwalking geniuses. They have the ability to be so, so good which makes the place as it is currently so frustrating!

The food was fantastic, slightly pricey but really very tasty. Great sharing platters and my veal burger was amazing! My Portion was huge but my partners was quite small. The service was decent but nothing special and the wine was lovely. However, we were charged an extra bottle of wine that we did not order or drink and didn't realise until we were home as we had a number of bottles that hazed our judgement. Overall excellent experience
