I agree with the other reviewers - this definitely feels like you're renting a room and not staying as a guest at a hotel. I didn't think this would matter since we were only staying one night but I still came away feeling disappointed and like I had been royally ripped off (at £175/night).

I had requested a room in the main building but we were given an annex room with windows and front door right on the street (and no explanation during a very rushed check-in). Absolutely no privacy if you want any amount of daylight. There was a noticeable bug/fly problem around the bottom of the front door (inside and outside) and the bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly. We were called at 11am on the dot on the morning of check-out and told "we are waiting for you at Reception, if you do not come now there will be a £15 surcharge" and then during check-out we were told we couldn't leave our luggage at Reception because the Receptionist wanted to leave early. I don't mind an 11am check-out - I do mind being treated as if I'm a major inconvenience and very unwelcome.

On the positive side the bed was large and pretty comfortable and the mini kitchen, if a tad odd, came with a good supply of snacks.

I stayed here two years ago for about half the price with a nicer room and friendlier service. This time around it was definitely not worth the money and I will not be returning. It's a real shame because it should be competition to the overpriced hotels in the city centre but it's still not worth it.

Room Tip: I would say that you should request a room in the main building but it didn't seem to make a dif...

Having read a few recent poor reviews after already booking our room we were a bit nervous of what we may find. We were very pleasantly surprised by the room which was on the first floor. It was spacious and clean and the kitchenette and breakfast basket were just what we wanted. The room had everything you could want including fridge, microwave, iron and board, safe, ipad docking station etc etc and was very stylishly decorated. Reviews had said how staff did not seem to care. The lady that checked us in was great and couldn't be more helpful. There was no sign of a dark, dirty alleyway with rooms along it. The rooms downstairs have their own entrance onto the street but there is a small paved area before the pavement itself, so people aren't walking right next to your window. The room was cleaned daily and all food etc replenished. The only negative comment i could make was that the extra bed we ordered for our room (there were 3 of us staying in a double) was quite hard and narrow (it was like a delux camping bed without a mattres), fine for a child or one night for an adult but any longer and it became uncomfortable.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor are probably more private than the rooms at street level - we had room...

Don't be fooled by the website - this is not an exclusive hotel but more like a room rental with very limited access to staff. The staff are only available from 9am til 5pm. So if you arrive early or later, bad luck! If anything goes wrong, you phone a call centre and if you are lucky you may talk with someone from the hotel. In saying that, the location is great, the room very comfortable and well presented. It's just a pity the service doesn't match.

This 'hotel' is simply an extended end of terrace house on a residential estate in Oxford. There are no facilities at the property to validate their 4 star rating or 4 star pricing. The room was on the ground floor the door exited onto the narrow public footpath (complete with dog poo) the windows could not be opened more than 10mm as they would obstruct the public path. public traffic outside day and night. No lobby, no facilities, no bar, no breakfast or meals, no room service, no switchboard, no parking, no concierge, not a hotel. Who rates these properties? A renovated bathroom and an IKEA rug do not make a 4 star hotel but they think they can charge 4 star prices and when I tried to cancel on arrival was told I could not have a refund on my card.

Room Tip: If you have to stay try get a room not on the ground floor, if you can turn around and go home, then...

We are sorry you experienced these issues. The hotel is now under new management, and offers a fully licensed bar and restaurant/pizzeria, offering cask conditioned real ale, fine wine, Lavazza espresso, full english breakfast and Might Leaf afternoon tea. We offer a "Bubbly Reception" (complimentary Prosecco, Cava or Champagne upon arrival), as well as Italian chocolates. We also provide a complimentary grazing table throughout the day, warm scones at 2pm, canapé with drinks between 6pm and 8pm, and complimentary antipasto and petit four to enjoy with a night cap from 8.30pm to 10pm. If you visit Oxford again, please contact me directly, at: manager@ethoshotels.co.uk, so I can arrange a complementary upgrade to one of our comfortable and spacious Suites.

My wife booked a night at this 'Hotel' as a treat for my birthday and despite the high cost decided to splash out as it was a special occasion. I am afraid that despite the modern boutique styling this accommodation has no facilities and provides accommodation far below that of a B&B let alone a Hotel.

Their is no Bar, Breakfast area or any of the other characteristics typically associated with a Hotel. Breakfast is provided from the in-room fridge and microwave - very basic and certainly not the luxurious pampered weekend away we envisaged based on the rate charged.

The 'Hotel' is an end terrace with on street parking some 200 yards down the road. In our room the shower screen was missing and the handles had been removed from the mixer shower making it difficult to operate.

I mentioned my dis
appointment on checking out but got little sympathy from the receptionist.

In summary, whilst their would appear to be few central hotels available in Oxford, perhaps allowing this Hotel to command a higher price than would be justified in many similar towns, I would suggest that you would be advised to book a proper hotel a little further out and use Taxis to get about.

Room Tip: Over priced with no facilities. Avoid if possible. This is at the most a £50 a night rooming house.

Thought we'd gone to the wrong place when we drove up a narrow street with resident parking only on both sides and nowhere to park the car. Arrived here late in the evening after a very long tiring drive and was really disappointed to be escorted to our room, which was not within the building itself. The bedroom door opened straight out onto the street - no carpeted corridor as would be expected for paying £211 per night!! Couldn't leave the curtains open due to the proximity to the pavement and pedestrians passing by and looking in.
Unpacked only to find two hangers in the very narrow wardrobe. We requested more and were given another two and advised to contact housekeeping in the morning if we wanted more. There wouldn't have been enough room for more! The room was clean and tidy but the walls were very thin and we could hear everything from the adjoining room (via connecting door). Lost a couple of items down the sink due to a missing "plug" as no shelving/cupboard to put toiletries. The fridge was very noisy and had to be unplugged so we could sleep and the muffins that there were the day we arrived were not replaced during our 4 night stay. Re the car parking - apparently the owner has an arrangement with the local traffic department and advised us to park a couple of streets away at a local park local (two hour parking zone) and he would see to it that we didn't get a ticket. We were a bit apprehensive and went to check on the car daily. Overall, a terrible experience and will never stay here again. We checked out a day early.

No parking , not secure , whirring air con at door , door on side street, window on side street , rubbish ( old mattress etc ) propped against other side of the wall of the bedroom .
