“Can't beat the location!”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

Very good location right by/within the university. Everything within walking distance. Comfortable room. Good polite help at the reception. Only two complaints: the room at the top of the stairs... the stairs are horrible while carrying heavy luggage, to give some credit, the young man at the reception helped carry. :-) Second complaint: the breakfast is so-so... my scrambled eggs were overcooked to the point they were dry and and flavorless... I could have done a better job if they'd let me! I would stay here again, though, if coming to Oxford.

Room Tip: If you don't like too many stairs, try to book a room lower down...

You can't beat the location and the room was large and comfortable. My only gripe was that I had a street side room and I was woken up through the night by drunken shouting and then reversing lorrys - make sure you pack ear plugs!

Stayed here for 2 nights in July. Having lived in Oxford for 4 years, I could say this hotel has the best location as it's right in the centre (even slightly more convenient than Randolph). The room was clean and nicely decorated, even though it's quite basic, e.g. it lacked a fridge. If you don't expect something extravagant, this is definitely the hotel to choose.

An extremely comfortable, clean hotel in just the best location.
We're a family of four- 2 adults and 2 teenage boys. We all stayed in one room but never felt overcrowded. The room was absolutely spotless and all the beds were exceedingly comfortable. It was really hot when we visited but with the fans in the room, it was just perfect.
All the staff were very polite, friendly and helpful.
The location is just perfect. One morning, after breakfast, I nipped round the corner to the Bodliean Library to book tickets, nipped back for a relax then we all nipped round for the tour. I can't stress how great a location it is.
A few times also, we nipped back to the room for a relax before moving on to more sight-seeing/ shopping. It's so well located.
The breakfast was also fantastic- enough to fill even my 15 year old son! AND enough variety to cater for us all.
On the day we left, they also kept our cases till we were ready to leave so we were able to do more sight-seeing.
Free wi-fi (wireless, or even with an extra long networking cable so you could plug in if you wanted) kept everyone in touch.
It really made our time in Oxford fantastic.
The only downside I could envisage is the stairs. If you have mobility problems then this isn't the place for you. But as it didn't affect us, it was just perfect. AND 'Lewis' was filmed there too.
Brilliant. Thanks.

Great location right in the centre of Oxford and as commented by others you do need to carry bags up steep stairs although staff do offer to help. The hotel staff were extremely welcoming and cheerful - could not be faulted.
We asked in advance for a quiet room and were immediately promised one at the back. Whilst small and with no view, it was not overlooking a noisy main street. Unfortunately the room was stifling hot and even the two fans that were in the room made no appreciable difference to the heat of the room. The two nights we were there were not particularly hot and with the window wide open there was noise from the various a/c units and ventilation fans on other buildings outside. The other negative about the building is that every floorboard creaks so you wake up when the earliest riser does. Several of the rooms are directly off the reception area so as everyone comes in to pick up their key, they pass the rooms on creaky foorboards and obviously have to speak to the receptionist. If you are a sound sleeper these comments are probably of little concern but, they do need to find a way of cooling the building down.

The biggest disappointment was at breakfast and whilst the issue was relatively trivial, it may say something else. The cooked breakfast looked very good but we just wanted continental breakfast. The porridge on the first day was almost solid but acceptable. On the second day, it was obviously microwaved to oblivion with a hard crust of frazzled oatmeal over the top of a bowl of milk/water. Apart from not being very nice, what sort of establishment employs a chef who a) relies on a microwave and b) doesn't understand the concept of having to stir microwaved food to ensure even cooking? (I did note afterwards that others have compained about microwaved eggs.)
As noted above - only a small point but it is unprofessional and it is the small things that stick in the mind and which should be really easy for management to change and give a better experience.

Room Tip: A room at the back and the very top of the building would at least minimise the sounds of other gues...

We stayed here for 2 nights from 9th August 2013 for a Wedding at Jesus College. All in all, it was a fabulous place to stay. We were in a room overlooking Balliol College which was really lovely - absolutely brilliant views. Breakfast was delicious with quite a wide range available, including a pretty decent Full English!

Our room was absolutely huge. We had more than enough room for the two of us. It was clean and well kept. There was a fan which was amazing as it was a very hot couple of nights! We did have a bit of a leak through the bathroom ceiling from the room above, but the staff at reception was sorted promptly.

We were disappointed that our room didn't get cleaned on Saturday despite us being out pretty much all day, but to be honest, it wasn't too much of a big deal. However, it might be a problem for some of you so I thought I should mention it!

All in all, we had a lovely stay. The staff were very friendly, and they have a brilliant system of taking back your key every time you leave the hotel, so you never have to worry about losing it!

Room Tip: The view over Balliol College is well worth it!

Very hot weather when I visited so it was appreciated that there was a fan in the room. The room overlooked Balliol and it really was a very pleasant view. Everything was comfortable in my room and the reception staff on the front desk were extremely pleasant and helpful. Bed was comfortable, bathroom modern and clean. Would definitely use again. It was a bit noisey on the street at night with the windows open so if you really want silence be aware of this. However, in central Oxford on a front faciing room I would expect a bit of noise.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems you will need help with bags up the narrow stairs.
