“Don't forget to ask for clotted cream in the Cafe!”

This is one of my favourite places in Oxford, specially when it's the summer and you can sit outside on the terrace, facing the grand buildings of the centre. The service is fast and friendly, and the toasts with clotted cream and strawberry jam absolutely delicious!!!

First impressions not great, reception and stairs to the rooms look a bit rough. But don't worry rooms are clean and comfortable with decent sized bathroom and good shower.
Location right in the middle of the city and lots to see very close by. All staff very friendly and helpful, I would happlily stay again if I was in Oxford
Good breakfast served in the cafe downstairs.
Not cheap compared to other cities, but seems to be reasonable for Oxford.

My boyfriend and I stayed here this weekend and had a great time. Our room was at the back of the building so we were lucky it was very quiet. But I imagine if you're at the front it could be noisy at weekends. I was pleased with size of the room, it was really spacious with high ceilings, also nice and clean. The breakfast was ok, you had the choice of cereals, pastries, fruit, toast or full english etc we had full english both days - but its definitely not cooked to order as they say it is! The staff in the hotel, from reception to housekeeping were all really attentive, friendly and polite - full credit to the owners...especially as it has only been open for a few years! 4* hotel I think it is scored mostly on its location very central within walking distance of everything and convenient that breakfast/cafe is downstairs....I can't score it a 5 because quality of the breakfast and rooms aren't 5* standard. But all in all we were really pleased and had a great stay, thank you :-)

....this is a great independent English hotel in a listed building. So, know that there are steep stairs and no elevator, that not everything will be in perfect knick, that sound carries, that the breakfast options will be limited. And, because the hotel is on a main street in a late night town, be aware that if you have a lovely big room to the front you will hear street noise. So why the 5*? because the location can't be beat, the staff are lovely, the breakfast is good and the big rooms are (by English standards) quite roomy. And, although we had sticker shock, by the standards of Oxford, it was very good value! We had a fabulous stay.

We enjoyed room 201 for our short 4 days stay. From the windoes you can see Broad street and the college. The room was spacious and clean. The beds were comfortable! Also the bathroom was clean and quite large. A very nice English breakfast is served by very friendly staff. For coffee lovers, you can have an espresso Lavazza to start your morning! A real treat.
The hotel location is very central and easy to find, just near the Boswells department store.
A short walk from the Gloucester Green bus terminal.
Just one point need to be considered, there is no elevator in this old house hence you need to be fit enough to climb the stairs! We will return to this hotel when we return to Oxford next time.

Room Tip: Rooms 101, 201 and 301 have two beds and a sofa that can be converted into a bed. They all face the...

We stayed at the Buttery for one night for a university reunion. We had wanted to stay somewhere central but not pay over the odds - which can be tough in Oxford which isn't a town known for it's 'value' accomodation.

We were happy at the Buttery - it felt more like a good B&B than a hotel. We were on the first floor, 101, the room was a decent size, clean enough, with a ensuite bathroom that didn't feel crammed. There was noise from the street but to be honest I'd generally anticipate that when staying in the middle of a busy town on a Saturday night. Breakfast was ground floor in the cafe bit of the establishment and was plentiful and tasted nice.

Tip, parking is a nightmare in the middle of Oxford, and the Buttery doesn't have its own parking. The park and ride is very convenient though. We parked overnight in the Peartree park & ride car park, and the 300 bus (which took about 10 minutes) then stops at the end of Broad Street, very close to the hotel. A lot cheaper, and easier, than trying to search out parking in central Oxford.

If I was looking for a plush romantic hotel to visit then I wouldn't pick out the Buttery, but then I would expect to pay a bit more for an Oxford stay in that case. But for a decent convenient base, at a price that (though not cheap by general standards) is reasonable for Oxford, I would stay at the Buttery again.
