As both a Tolkien and Lewis fan I had to visit the Eagle and Child. I loved the atmosphere, the food was good and the people friendly. It's a bit like visiting a house instead of an eating/drinking establishment.

And as all the pubs in Oxford, this is another perfect one.
J.R.R Tolkien, C.S Lewis and Charles Williams used to come here to discuss the books they were writting.

Came here for a drink to soak in the historic atmosphere. Old English pub, was a great place to grab a drink before dinner. Bustling after work, was a great vibe. Love how they have the “Narnia” door.

...but not the greatest food. Get there early if you are eating so that you can choose which of the delightful rooms you would like to be in or you get put 'down the back' which is OK but nothing like as atmospheric.

Yes, the Tolkein pictures are all there et al. They obviously loved it so you should too!

Looking at previous posts we wondered if we were in the same pub. We went on a Friday evening and yes it was very busy but we soon found a seat. We were soon talking to some very friendly non locals as are we. The choice of beer was very good served by very friendly staff. We,ve been before and we'll be back. We did eat this time but the food looked good to us.
