“Elegance and outstanding beauty”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

For any American, for example, wanting to appreciate what elegant English country club can offer, you should definitely stay at the Phyllis Court Club. From the beautiful location right beside the Thames where you can walk, to watching the members dressed in their whites play croquet, or watch and listen to the coaching of the single skulls or coxed eights on the river, the Phyllis COurt is the epitome of a refined place to stay. The rooms are large, exceptionally pleasantly decorated and the king sized bed was very comfortable.
The staff are pleased to help and breakfast is delightfully served in the Orangery.
I would strongly recommend this to any visitors to Britain who appreciate luxury and quiet good manners. (Oh, and parking is easy: not always the case with many places in UK.)
It is a short walk into Henley-on-Thames where there is a wide choice of alternative places to eat, but for a feeling of comfort and a courteous staff who are most helpful, the Phyllis Court Club is outstanding. It's also a great base to drive out and explore the magic of the Thames or the nearby Cotswolds

Room Tip: We selected a standard room and were delighted.

Expectations were high of this hotel, given the location, cost of the rooms and huge emphasis on dress code.
We’d recently arrived off a long-haul flight and were looking forward to relaxing for a few hours prior to the evening engagements which had been planned several weeks earlier.
However, battling our way through the main entrance with 2 large and 2 little suitcases, no help was afforded us from an expected bell boy, but it did draw the attention of the receptionist, who seemed to look on in distain that we weren’t able to hold open the fire doors and float our way through.
On checking-in, we weren’t made at all to feel welcome, which was reinforced when verbally informed we had to sign acknowledging the dress code.
The room itself wasn’t anything outstanding, clean ish but at least the doors and windows kept out the cold, although the views of the river were lovely.
Eagerly wishing to unpack and freshen up, I took out the clothes I was planning to wear for dinner, but realised they’d need a quick iron.
No iron or board to be found I tried calling reception, no joy though as it appeared the phones were out of order, I’m glad we weren’t advised of this at check-in as it gave me another opportunity to stretch my legs after the long flight and drive and so walked back down to reception.
With a smile the receptionist then advised me that the telephone system had been down all day, apologised for the inconvenience, but would send up an iron and board immediately. To her credit she brought them herself within about 10mins. I forgot to mention that I’d never ironed clothes with a rusty iron before, but at least it added a new dimension of colour to my creased shirt.
My wife in the interim had decided to have a shower as we were running a little late, but on hearing as though a bath was running, I thought she’d changed her mind. Oh no darling was her response, the plug only lifts up a nano millimetre. Two in one, what a clever concept I thought, no wonder the room was pricey.
Finding a spare plug socket was also a challenge, perhaps there was some fire regulation that only one socket per room was allowed?
We were due to meet friends in Henley and knew the town wasn’t too far to walk to, although it had been raining, there was break in the weather and we thought we’d chance it, again to stretch our legs and take in the wintery air. Asking the receptionist if there was a short cut to town just in case the rain started again, wasn’t a good idea. Unfortunately she didn’t know, however, she did ask if we wanted a taxi. It’s nice to know the ‘local staff’ are familiar with the area.
Luckily we were only staying the one night, we decided to miss breakfast and eat elsewhere in the morning.
As an aside, we stayed at the Marriott and Ritz on our stay in England, price pound for pound, the Phyllis Court has a long way to go before it’d meet even the basic level of a reputable hotel, unless of course you dress smartly.

A private club that lets rooms to non members, it is on the edge of Henley town with a river frontage. The staff are outstanding and made the difference to our visit. The rooms are generous with comfortable beds and the public rooms pleasant and airy. Best English breakfast in a long time, a small minus for sliced bread for toast but otherwise perfectly cooked. When we booked we were e-mailed back to let us know there was a function on, in case we wanted to cancel. There is a dress code so if you want to slob around it may not be the place for you.

Room Tip: Some rooms are over the function room so ask if anything is taking place if you like an early night.

We are members of the club and stayed the night for a special occasion. We could not fault it in any way. The rooms have superb views of the river and you are close enough to stroll into Henley, while leaving the car at the club (not in the non-members car park, as you are treated as members for the duration of your stay, so have the convenience of the closer car park). All the food we had, for dinner and breakfast, was excellent, and charmingly served.

I am a member of the Club but as we live a distance away, we sometimes stay overnight.

The food in the dining room is excellent with attentive service and there is also the less formal Orangerywith equally friendly staff which overlooks the grounds and the river.

We have found the breakfasts excellent with a good choice and food that is well cooked. There are standard and superior rooms most of which overlook the river. If you really want some space book one of the superior rooms otherwise the standard ones are very good and of course cheaper.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a river view

This was very well priced and well cooked. Friendly and attentive service. Lost a star because the breakfast room was a bit cool for a chilly autumn day. I did not stay, but I am a member. Tends to suit retired people.

Our recent stay at this hotel was somewhat disappointing for the price we paid for B&B. Our superior room whilst having a great view of the river and gardens was poorly thought out and badly laid out. We were slightly surprised to find no drawers for clothes other than a very low unit more like a sideboard than bedroom furniture, bedside lights which were impossible to read by and a bathroom door which did not shut properly. Also if it is necessary in a room to have some device for insect control, it should be regularly emptied and not left full of corpses.
Breakfast is served in a delightful, light-filled orangery but the service, whilst friendly, was haphazard with dirty plates not cleared and orders not brought. The food served is basic hotel standard, small boxes of cereals (very limited choice), basic sliced bread and tired looking pastries, and although the full English breakfast was very good, the scrambled eggs on toast tasted as if made from powdered eggs rather than fresh ones.
Phyllis Court holds itself out to be a bastion of traditional standards with its emphasis on correct behaviour and dress; it should look at its own standards and ask whether they would not benefit by being brought more into line with today's hotel offerings.
