“Nicholls wedding reception”
Reviewed November 23, 2013

Brilliant - our son and daughter-in-law's wedding was held in the hotel and many of the guests stayed at least one night. Our bedroom and the three others we saw were well furnished, clean and of a very good standard. The views from some rooms obviously differ, dependent where your room is located in the building. The Red Lion Hotel is an historic building and has been maintained as such, having quality fittings and many original features. The wedding breakfast and the breakfast were excellent - in fact faultless and the staff were all helpful, courteous and attentive.

Room Tip: Choose rooms with a river view.

My Husband and I plus over thirty friends who we had recommended to stay at the Red Lion were there in October What a disaster rooms are dirty unehlpful staff and dreadful food The hotel is very shabby our room had a wonderful view over the river but the plug was not attached to the bath a badly cracked washbasin no robes no safe no bath gel even - would have been better at a Travel Lodge Breakfast was just so bad one couple would not stay for it on Sunday and went into Henley Only fried eggs offered swimming in grease any scrambled I asked the staff did not seem to know what I was talking about Orange juice on the Sunday not available as a bride was allergic to it and was staying the night surely it was obvious it was orange? Hot milk for cofffee arrived in a small cup The staff are just running about like headless chickens We had been going to have a dinner there for thirty plus friends on the Friday and had moved it to the Hotel du Vin down the road Would have moved all the accommodation but it was too late We had dinner at the Red Lion in June and after the first course had been served were asked if we wanted crisps and nuts as the one steak ordered by the party was taking a long time to cook There was no lager very little of the wine was available and no dry martini On the Saturday morning I requested sandwiches for our party something I had asked the owner Mr Sam Gill to make sure would be available 'no food today' I was told and only after yet another row did a helpful lady called Anna come up with the sandwiches Amit Kumar also tried to help the rest of the staff are not interested ill trained so very unhelpful The hotel occupies a prestigious situation in Henley but the service can and was by many of our friends staying there as being at Faulty Towers but with none of the humour of John Cleese The bedding seemed cleaned but threadbare and the towels have certainly seen better days One friend had a toilet seat that was not attached at all and despite asking several times this was not mended

A swipe of our credit cards when we arrived meant that the money was taken from our cards despite almost all the guests complaining Not a good place to stay it needs a complete over haul it is all very shabby staff to be trained in the bascis of hotel care

Was interested to see that somebody had paid a special rate of £120 when I was offered £155 including breakfast - breakfast is terrible

Room Tip: Sadly I should stay at the Hotel du Vin or Millsons

Right in the middle of Henley but rooms are a bit run down. Bathroom looked about 20 years old and the bed sheet was threadbare in places. At £120 a night without breakfast I don't think it's good value for money really.

The Red Lion looks lovely - and the rooms are also generally nice, a bit shabby perhaps with the broken roller blinds and slightly torn bedsheets. Other amenities are a bit lacking - like no baby change anywhere in the hotel (and the staff were completely unapologetic about this - suggesting we just clear our selves a surface), and I think the electrics must be faulty as charging my iPhone resulted in it melting.

The 3pm check in time is not mentioned in any of the reservation details I was sent which meant a little bit of moping around waiting to check in.

The really disappointing part of the experience was the feeling that the staff really were far to busy to deal with mere customers. Why make someone feel welcome when you can spend that time folding napkins or talking about your last night out.

We had our wedding in the Red Lion on the 5th October 2013 and could not have been happier with how the day went. In the run up to the wedding, Vivienne was very helpful and met with us several times to discuss the details. Atul and a young lady manager were running the wedding on the day and everything ran smoothly and to times. The staff were very accommodating with a few unusual requests and went above board to assist us. We had booked the venue through a groupon deal so saved around £2000, although it was necessary to add on a few bits and bobs, for example the evening buffet would have been sparse had we stuck to the groupon deal, and it did not include chair covers.

The food at both the daytime meal and the evening buffet was excellent, with the portions being extremely generous, in fact the biggest meal I've ever had at a wedding! The chef was happy to garnish both our wedding cake and a cheese stack we had provided also.

The location is stunning and we had some fantastic pictures outside the hotel and in the little garden beside Henley bridge, also over the road beside the Angel where there are beautiful hanging baskets. Anyone looking at this, thinking about holding their wedding here, I would also recommend our wedding photographer Gareth Richards.

The DJ was fab in the evening and there was a real party atmosphere. We had 120 guests in the evening, which were comfortably accommodated in the big room by the river. They were also happy for us to bring a photobooth for our guests and everything was set up as soon as we had finished the meal in the back room so there was no waiting around.

We had suite 100 for the night before and the night of the wedding which was beautiful and had more than enough room for me and my bridesmaids to get ready in. Many other family members also stayed and were given great rooms overlooking the river.

All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this as a wedding venue.

We had our wedding ceremony/ wedding breakfast and reception at the red lion and it was an amazing day. The staff were amazing and so helpful from the organising and run up to the wedding and on the day. We can not fault them at all. Everything was perfect. We would highly recommend the venue. All the stress was taken away from us and the staff dealt with everything. All of our guests loved the venue and the kindness of the staff. They organised the DJ for us as we'll and he was brilliant. They also organised a separate room for our guests who stayed in the hotel to have breakfast together which extended our special day a bit further for us. Thank you so much to everyone at the red lion hotel (henley) you made our day truly special. Kylie and Michael Wheeler (Wedding 26/1013) x
