“Afternoon tea.”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

we went to the Red Lion for the groupon afternoon tea, that must be so popular we had to book a date after the voucher expired, but the hotel were fine with this.

after reading so many negative reviews we set our expectations low. very low.

After a short wait in reception due to the restaurant being busy with Sunday lunches (another Groupon) we were shown through to a lovely lounge area overlooking the front of the hotel, and had our champagne, which actually was champagne rather than something a bit cheaper.

After lots of apologising that we would have to wait, it took no more than 10 minutes for the high tea tower to arrive...

fresh finger sandwiches, including a 'tomato tea sandwich', yes such a thing does exist. Just tomato. if you're demanding cheese too then pop to Pret instead.

all the sandwiches could be seasoned a bit more (basil with the tomatoes, salt on the cucumber etc), but then might not appeal to everyone.

onto the tea and cakes, two slices of each, a lemon and a fruit cake, and then the gorgeous scones.

we were very full by the end of it.

not sure what other reviewers were expecting, we found it a relaxing afternoon break from shopping in Henley.

£59.90? of course not, Claridge’s is £38 each, but how many groupon deals are worth the RRP. but for £12 each it was very very enjoyable.

This historical property is just a few steps from the Thames and 5 minutes from the train station. It is such a lovely place, with so much character. The bar has a pub atmosphere - great selection of beers and liquors for such a small space - hard not to love it. Breakfast is included and it is pretty good- all options you may want from cold cuts, fruits, yogurts, omelettes, sausages, etc. I did not have their tea time in the afternoon but it seems like a neat experience. The hotel needs some TLC. From a nice painting, to replacing damaged upholstery to simple bathroom upgrades. The staff is very helpful and kind although some seemed lost and clueless about their duties. Attention to some basic traveller needs (i.e. more US to UK converters) could be improved.

Room Tip: Ask for a soom overseeing the Thames. Watching the Leander Club rowers getting ready for their morn...

We have just returned from The Red Lion. We had a fabulous time. Our room at the front overlooked the river. It was large and very comfortable with a feather duvet and immaculate bathroom. The staff very extremely helpful and cheerful. The car park was packed but the system of leaving your keys and the staff moving cars as required worked brilliantly. Our room was so quiet we overslept, which is unheard of for us. Breakfast was fresh and plenty of choice. We will return. Have no idea why so many find fault as we couldn't!

Room Tip: Room 116 large, comfy and fabulous view of the river

I went to the Red Lion for afternoon tea on a bit of a whim after wandering about Henley on a Sunday afternoon. The hotel was advertising afternoon tea outside but the staff at reception seemed quite confused when we asked if we could book ourselves in for an afternoon tea that day While discussing with the front desk (and manager) whether we would or wouldn’t be able to have afternoon tea, we were asked repeatedly for our Groupon voucher. We were made to feel as though you wouldn’t want afternoon tea at this hotel unless you were part of the Groupon special offer. When we were seated, the staff (more about whom later) were not sure if we would be allowed champagne / prosecco that we were fully prepared to pay for, as we were not part of the Groupon deal. After the waiter had spoken to the manager this was straightened out and our prosecco arrived shortly afterwards.
The tray was wonderfully presented but the food was quite a let down and we even had to ask the waiter if we could have tea with our afternoon tea… apparently he thought we might want to wait! I usually like to have tea with my sandwiches and cakes. The sandwiches consisted of a medley of egg mayo, tomato (not tomato and cheese or tomato and salad - just pieces of tomato between slices of white bread!) and cucumber (again, just cucumber...). The cakes were slightly better, but the scones had been over cooked in the oven.
The waiters were rather strange - all seemed a bit confused about how to serve afternoon tea and hovered weirdly around some of the other guests. At one point, with no prompt, one of the waiters offered to take a photo of a couple enjoying their afternoon tea! Throughout the afternoon the waiting staff milled around and got in each other’s way. We lost count of the number of times we were asked for our Groupon voucher even during the meal...
The hotel is beautiful and well decorated but let down on several fronts. This particular weekend, the hotel was hosting a big "RUG SALE". There was a large sign outside the hotel and the room opposite the main dining room had been dedicated to the sale of hundreds of discounted, Persian style rugs. This added to the overwhelmingly strange atmosphere and confused approach. It was as though the hotel is under new management that has decided to focus on special offers to boost business. The rug sale was totally unsuitable and would be much better suited to a village hall or market stall.
On a positive note, we paid just over £30 for two - only a few pounds above the Groupon special offer price (supposedly 50%+ off...). Including the glass of prosecco, I can't fault the price.

Like others here ... we found the phrase "lacking attention to detail" was the order of the day! Only went there for a 'Groupon' Cream Tea - so they weren't going to make a fortune from us, but being shown (twice) to un-cleared tables wasn't an auspicious start! ... and thank God it WAS a discounted deal 'cos if I'd paid £35 - the (allegedly) full price for 3 finger sarnies, an admittedly delicious Scone and 3 small cakes ... I'd have been LIVID!!
Overall the place had the feel of a formerly successful hotel which had been taken over by someone who didn't know how to run one!
The staff were pleasant and well meaning (even if their English wasn't great), but clearly didn't really know what they should be doing!
... and a sugar cube on the windowsill caused my wife and I much merriment in a 'Cluedo' stylee, but was only one of numerous pieces of evidence that the cleaner was no more effective than other staff! (The toilets were truly FOUL!!).

This place is great.....Me and my wife stayed at The Red Lion for one night and from when we arrived since we left the hotel, all was amazing. The reception team was very helpful and kind with us and they did everything to make our stay amazing.
In the restaurant the atmosphere is really good and warm and the staff there very good and professional.Dinner was great and breakfast just perfect.
Our room was an historical room with very nice vintage furniture and a very big and comfortable bed.
Over all our stay at The Red Lion was just great.
Thanks !

We purchased a groupon for 2 starters and 2 main courses. To be honest I think we over anticipated what we were going to get. Although the food was fine (I wouldn't describe it as better than fine) the overall experience lacked attention to detail...

> the tablecloth was dirty
> our table had no butter on it - we had to ask for it
> after ordering soup our starter knife/fork was not removed
> my husband's drink came in a glass branded by a different company
> there was no toilet roll in either of the ladies toilets

The food was hot and the meat tender but the roast potatoes were oily and when I asked how they were cooked the waitress guessed at "in the oven".

As you see it is little things but for a 4* hotel I expected more and came away a little disappointed.
