“A Glacial Chill”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

This old coaching inn, situated in the picturesque town of Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds, has the very real potential to be an excellent place in which to stay for a short visit or a longer stay. Sadly, it needs a complete makeover (decor, fixtures and fittings) to restore it to what it must once have been. It is evident that it was renovated to a high standard some years ago, but sadly none of this has been maintained (worn out mattress, damaged furniture, and broken plugs for the bath and washbasin). Some desultory attempts seem to have been made in places to brighten up the ceilings with fresh emulsion, but no-one has bothered to clear up the resultant paint splashes from off other surfaces.

While we were there (in January) the heating was not working in any of the corridors in the annexe (night storage heaters) nor in the swimming pool and sports complex (proper central heating).

The chef also seemed to have difficulty in understanding the concept of hot food - as opposed to warm. I had to raise this on a couple of occasions and also point out that plates on which hot food is served should be warmed.

As to the staff, a group of well meaning youngsters who, whilst all very pleasant, were from all four corners of the globe - except from England - and none of them had the authority to address the issues which we raised. Obviously, none of them spoke English as a first language and one wonders if this is deliberate on the part of the management, so that no-one is on hand to deal with any genuine concern(s) which may be raised by guests. It seemed that someone from Management was only likely to be available AFTER we had departed the hotel.

We have written to the absent Management to raise specific matters of concern, but it remains to be seen if the letter receives a reply which deals adequately with them - financial recompense is what should follow. If this was a school report then the phrase "could do much better" springs to mind.

Room Tip: If staying there in the winter, then choose one in the old part of the building, not in the annexe...

Beautiful old hotel, very warm, clean and comfortable. Staff always polite and helpful.

Food excellent - and abundant!! For me and my wife, Christmas time is the most wonderful time of the year and there at the Crown Hotel we really spent a really good time.

We went to Chipping Norton on a Christmas package, which was a excellent deal! On Christmas Day we had a beautiful menu filled with delectable dishes that made our mouth water! A five course meal which was also included in the package and, no doubt, it was the best meal in years.

Both the restaurant and the staff were beautifully dressed up in seasonal attire to add that extra special sparkle to the season. A programme of enjoyable entertainment. All in all a great break to cheer us up for a hopefully lucky year :)

We had a lovely off season stay here, the staff were very courteous and helpful. We had a decent size room which was well heated with a large powerful shower and very clean. The pool was kept at a very comfortable temperature. I'm so glad I didn't read other reviews before I booked this hotel or probably wouldn't have chosen it. Very good value, the food was fine, good price in the bar by the log fire, personally I can't fault the place having stayed in much more expensive establishments with far worse service, cleanliness and amenity.

Room Tip: we had superior room so can,t comment on lower grades

Stayed at the hotel for a week end on my birthday. My husband booked a 4 poster room and he also ordered champagne flowers and chocolates to be put in the room. The room was lovely nice big 4 poster very warm and cosy. We ate in the restaurant beautifully decorated and the food and service was first class. Throughout our stay the staff were very friendly and helpfull. We also made use of the pool which was very nice. The hotel was easy to find as it was in the centre of the town but had its own car park at the rear.

Room Tip: Definately pay a bit extra and book a 4 poster room

Worst service and awful food our families had ever had .Friends in Chipping Norton did warn us about their experience we now wish we had taken their advise. Lets hope things get better as this is the biggest hotel in town, its such a shame. Our complaint has still not be acknowledged lets hope they will do soon ..

Once again a brilliant New Year stay, everyone my wife and i spoke to said how good it was. Thanks to Linda & family and cheery helpful staff for a wonderful New Year. We shall be staying again next New Year. We have stayed at many places for new Year but this has to be the best as it was our third stay.

Room Tip: Traffic noise on the front could bother some people
