“Excellent value, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

Been here two or three times this year. Always great value. Great variety of self-service starters. Good selections of roasts and vegetables. Location is good with good views and an historically interesting building. The lady owner/manager was vey pleasant and all staff seemed genuinely helpful.
No longer advertised outside, but still happening, is the 'kids eat free between 6 and 7 on Saturdays' offer. Well worth it, our kids (7 and 4) loved it. Worth a bit of a drive to get there.
Note if raining: The entrance drive is very uneven and deep puddles appear when wet, but no great problem to negotiate with care.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

We booked sunday lunch here as we had passed by on the way to a campsite and seen all the advertisement posters. I also checked it out on Trip Advisor.
We were warmly welcomed, our table was made ready for us while we had a drink, and we chose to have the buffet starter. It would have been helpful if there were labels on the dishes so that we knew what they contained. I do not eat poultry, and what I thought was a potato salad was infact a turkey dish. Luckily a chef came to check the display and went through the contents of each dish/platter at our request. In this day and age of allergies, surely labels are needed.
We enjoyed the starters, and then for the carvery, on our day the selection was Turkey, Beef or Gammon. It all looked very good, and the chef serving it was very chatty and even gave me his recipe for the huge yorkshire puddings. The roast potatoes were a bit soggy and some were burned. The roasted parsnips were not crispy either. I asked if the gravy, only one kind for whatever meat you had, contained poultry stock and the chef admitted it did. He then got another assistant to make me some vegetarian gravy, as they do not serve beef gravy.
When we got back to our places, the beautiful, large, light yorkshire puddings were stone cold.
The meat was tepid and the potatoes and parsnips tasted as if they had been warmed in a microwave. It all looked so good, but we were really disappointed. Some of the Pub Chains produce hotter, tastier carvery meals than this ( But not as good looking Yorkshires).

“Another excellent roast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

As ever, the carvery roast (choice of turkey, beef and pork) was excellent and the lemon meringue roulade enjoyed by two of us for pudding was delicious.
