“Great Sunday Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2010

We went here to relax for a night after our wedding and found it friendly and comfortable. We got a great value Sunday offer which included lunch. The lunch itself was a bit disapointing but everything else was lovely.

very nice little hotel, cosy and perfect for a relaxing weekend away from london. very large rooms, clean and with all necessary facilities. as good as a stay in a luxury hotel but in a in informal, friendly environment. Very nice decor both in rooms and lobby, + lovely little garden. located in the village, but not on the main road which makes it very quiet.
Particularly impressed by the restaurant, really top quality, serving refined but unpretentious food, typical country style food revisited with a modern twist.
Overall a great stay perfect to relax in a pleasant and friendly environment.

When we pulled up outside the Hotel we thought it was perfect, walking through the garden and courtyard at the back it just looked beautiful. Inside looked cosy and we were really pleased with our choice, but... we had been out all day at the fairford airshow and had rung to say we wouldn't get there till 9'oclock. It was 9'o clock exactly when we arrived and asked if they were still serving dinner, the reply was 'yes if we ate in the bar area', no problem and proceeded to go into the bar to be told by some one else that the other girl was new and Dinner stopped at 9 but we could possibly have a sandwich if we were quick. We declined.
We went back to reception and said to the receptionist "Hello we have come to check in" and she said completely flustered 'I am not supposed to be here I should be next door'. No 'hello welcome to the Lamb!' She then asked someone else to take over and we were shown our room. We then went to the indian restaraunt on the high street which was probably the best curry I have ever had, really friendly, highly recommended.

The room was good value we paid £96 on their website (reduced rate) including breakfast, it was reasonably clean although the carpet was very stained. It had a lovely big bath and Molton brown toiletries. The TV aerial didn't work and I agree about the flap jacks being open, didn't fancy those. The information pack said food was served til 9.30 in the restaraunt every day.

Burford is just lovely and the Hotel building itself was really beautiful and we possibly would stay again but the service really needs to improve. There seemed to be no ownership or pride maybe because it is a chain with no real leadership. Breakfast was plentiful but the staff got people's orders muddled up and even took food away from one couple after he had squeezed lemon on his kippers and gave them to another couple telling them it was some one elses food as they had ordered first... it wasn't pleasant to watch. Other orders were muddled too and it wasn't that busy.

When we checked out the receptionist answered two phone calls whilst serving me, taking a reservation and checking me out at the same time, she was brighter and more friendly but still it is nice to have the attention of the staff you are speaking too.

Just to compare we went to another pub the Horse and Groom in Bourton on the Water. When we arrived the manager came out from behind the bar shook our hands and introduced himself, he remembered our first names throughout our stay and made us feel so welcome and he was proud to work in this pub. He didn't own it but obviously there was leadership right through this establishment. He even made a point of coming to say goodbye the night before we checked out as he wouldn't be there in the morning. This is just what the Lamb was lacking, get this right and it could truly be perfect.

My husband and I have just returned from spending a night at the Lamb. We were celebrating our Ruby Anniversary and after checking on Trip Advisor and the Lamb's own website, decided this is where we would come. What a lovely place Burford is and the Lamb Inn certainly did not disappoint in any way. We were able to check in at 12.15pm when we arrived, as the room was ready. The male receptionsist was very friendly and helpful. We had to park a little way from the hotel, as it was busy, but within 5 minutes of us being in our room, he rang to say there was a space right outside the hotel and he was holding it for us. We enjoyed a light lunch in the courtyard which is very attractive. On returning to the hotel later, we sat and had a drink in the lovely garden. It's a typical English country garden and a very pleasant place to sit, chat and reminisce! Some while later, we enjoyed a glass of prosecco whilst we perused the menu and finally were taken to the attractive, tastefuly furnished dining room. The food was superb and the service excellent too! Each course was perfectly cooked and presented and we were very pleased. So glad we chose the Lamb for our special celebration....we will certainly return :-)

Having previously eaten at the Lamb many years ago, we always vowed to return and stay and based on the recent reviews, we couldn't wait. We were however, disapppinted with what we found.

Upon arrival there was nowhere to park at all and we had to park half a mile away. No obvious door to enter so tried fumbled about finding entry and when we did - no staff could be found.. Eventually found a barman who went in search of receptionist. We were in the small bar area/check in area, whch looked dark and very untidy and didnt bode well. We were eventually led to our room, stepping over a hoover and piles fo dirty linen and an open box of flapjacks with flies on (these were being left in the rooms with the tea and coffee tray!).Housekeeping were obviously behind at 3pm.

Room (Stable) was pleasant enough - housekeeping a bit poor in places (dusty towel rail and skirting and floor) and bathroom was very cramped for taking a bath or shower. However, room was very quiet and we were only there for one night. I didn't risk the flapjacks!

We sat in the lovely back garden to enjoy the sunshine and views and waited 30mins for a waiter. We ordered Pimms and were told there was none left! I was appalled to be told this , esp as it was Summer and all they had to do was go to the hotel they own next door and get a bottle! But this was too much trouble, so we settled for something else. One prosecco and one glass of wine came to £14.80!!!!!!!!!!!!! We didnt bother to order more.

We ate in the restaurant that evening which was lovely, but more comfy for winter than summer. Strange atmosphere and the worst musak I have ever heard played anywhere. Food was faultless. It would have been nice if they had poured the wine or asked if we wanted more - surely thats what the 12.5% service charge is for. Nonetheless, food was superb. Breakfast was excellent in terms of food also, altho again the musak!! Cheap dated cover versions from a tinny sounding speaker does not bode well.

Wouldn't go back to stay - thought drink prices were unjustified and small room not worth £150.

My partner and I have just come back from a 2 night break (Fri-Sat) in The Lamb. From the moment we stepped through the door to the moment we sadly left, the whole weekend was an absolute joy.
I had booked online, a standard double room. So you can imagine my suprise to be shown into a beautifully furnished & spacious room, complete with lagre oak four poster bed (The Shepherd room). There was a small stamp on my registration document that said "complimentary upgrade". It set the tone for the rest of the stay.
Friday I had prebooked a table in the restaurant. It was fairly quiet (only 3 other tables booked) but it did not matter. The food was stunning, cooked by a chef with real flair and a great touch with flavour combinations (horseradish icecream with beef-a real tastebud sensation). Breakfast I always judge by the standard of how well they cook scambled eggs. These were perfect along with everything else we ate or drank over the weekend.
A huge thank you must go to all the staff at The Lamb, nothing was to much trouble. They were polite, cheerful and a credit to the place (the member of staff who delt with the "special" requests at breakfast on the Saturday moring deserved a medal for patience & diplomacy). It makes such a big difference when places get the level of service right and The Lamb does.
Its a gem of a place that made our stay special by exceeding expectations.
