“Curate's Egg”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2014

Five of us met for a family birthday lunch an Saturday 22 March. The initial reception and bar service were excellent but the meal in the restaurant was disappointing on two counts. Firstly, whilst the food itself was delicious and beautifully presented the portions were disappointingly small - far more style than substance. Secondly, the restaurant staff were very polite and attentive but the service was very slow with a long delay between the starter and main course - we think due to a larger party elsewhere in the hotel. Perhaps we'd have done better having a meal in the bar where the portions looked more generous......

We have eaten and stayed here previously when the dinner and accommodation were both excellent.

Thank you for your kind review of our service and hotel but I am disappointed to hear that you found our lunch portioning smaller than desired. I am aware that opinions are based on individual expectation and perception but I can assure that a lot of time, thought and testing has gone into ensuring our fayre is generally very acceptable. The menu consists of an amuse bouche, starter, main course and dessert with included coffee/tea and petit fours for £20 or £25 depending on whether or not you have the third course option. With so many courses arriving the portion size is smaller than our bar options as this tends to be a one course, quicker affair for lunch. This menu has been lauded as exceptional value on many occasions. I recall the day of your visit and the delay between starter and main was noted but not deemed to be too long. This was due to a full bar/lounge of leisure luncheon guests and not due to a large party anywhere in the hotel. I hope that on your next visit we have the opportunity to enhance upon the more positive aspects of your previous dining with us. I would personally enjoy assisting in this. Many thanks again.

We chose the Lamb because it was conveniently midway to meet with our friends and we love the Cotswolds generally. The Lamb is just off the main High Street so within easy walking distance of other restaurants, shops etc. There is no dedicated parking and when we arrived on a busy Saturday we had to park 100 yards away but the staff obligingly came to pick up our luggage and take it to our rooms. Subsequently we always found a spot in the road outside. The hotel is what you would expect from such an old building - quirky; steps; nooks and crannies and a steep narrow staircase. Our rooms were at the front and we did not see the others which seemed to be in the two wings at the rear. Log fires, comfy sofas and low ceilings created a welcoming atmosphere. Our rooms - a twin and a double - were well-appointed with period furniture - so plenty of storage and hanging space. The beds were blissfully comfortable and of course hair dryers and tea makers were available together with free Wi-Fi all over. Breakfasts were standard English at its best and delicious. We ate several times in the hotel on other occasions and again the food was of a high standard. It should be noted that the cuisine is in the upper echelons of gourmet with complicated dishes. If, like us, you prefer simpler food, the bar snacks may be more your style but even they are pretty upmarket! All are most beautifully presented. All staff were unfailingly helpful and willing to go the extra mile.

Room Tip: We enjoyed Shepherd with the 4 poster bed. Although looking out onto road not at all noisy. NB wa...

Thank you for such a strong and positive review. There are times when Tripadvisor reviews are a very good advert for the hotel and this is one of those occasions. I hope we will see you again soon

We had Dinner at The Lamb last Saturday evening. We ate in the lounge. The service was excellent and the food was very good. The portions were very large. We shared a seafood platter to start and it was enormous! We had a break before the main course which was very good indeed. The staff were very attentive and the place had a lovely atmosphere.

Room Tip: we only ate at the Lamb didn't stay overnight

We went on a very cold day in February , saw the cosy fire through the window and decided to go in. But tables seem to be a bit of a mish mash and we ended up on a tiny table with barely enough room to eat and drink on. We chose lunch from the menu, but my open cheese sandwich was very disappointing and ordinary for the extortionate price. Basically it was just bread with cheese on top and a bit of leaf salad for nearly £10. The very old quirky building though did make up for the disappointment . Sorry but I don't think I will go back again.

I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your sandwich with us. This is an open sandwich served with daily hotel-baked bread and local grated cheddar. On the side there is home-made chutney, dressed leaves and kettle chips. I have copied the menu entry below and believe that what you received was a direct execution of this, not ordinary but simple and exactly as advertised.

All sandwiches served with kettle chips and dressed leaves
Cheddar cheese with red pepper chutney £8.50

We stayed for one night and from when we walked through the door, the Manager and mature Receptionists were very helpful. Though the young staff lighting the fire seemed stressed and unable to cope with customer questions!

Lovely cosy bar with log fire and they took us to our room which was cosy and had lovely touches - Espresso machine, flapjacks, huge range of herbal tea and water. It's everyones personal preferences, but I dont like plates and strange pictures on the wall which personalises it, unless it reflects the location - spoilt it and felt like my grandmas room. Comfy beds and quiet at the side of the hotel. You get a full range of magazines which is lovely too. Bathroom was a little small but that is what you get in an oldy whirly hotel with character so as expected. The room was spotless so well done there.

We had lunch in the lovely gardens - let down. Steak and ale pie was £14 and didnt even come with Vegetables. It was runny and fatty and we felt ill all afternoon. However, on the plus side the breakfast is amazing. Lovely made to order breakfast from everything you can imagine and a full table of fresh fruit, homemade bread and cereal, with nuts. The best breakfast I have ever had.

It's a shame that lunch let it down and I suppose I compare what I am getting at £130 against thos in the Lakes and forget it's more expensive down South, so i have more expectations.

Do not take the 5 mile walk which it advertises as it's boring, across fields and sewage (which unfortunately is due to the floods). I am sure there are prettier walks near Blenheim Palace at Woodstock.

Room Tip: Park your car in the sister hotel next door - Bay Hotel. Do not eat off the menu at lunchtime.

Thank you for a review which highlights so many positives of the hotel and your experience with us. The warm and helpful welcome, lovely cosy bar, lovely touches in the spotless room, comfy bed, quiet room and amazing breakfast are all comments we are proud to hear. I am of the opinion that your hotel negatives are perspective based or circumstantial. It is saddening that the décor is not to your liking, this is usually perceived as a hotel strength. Our staffing ethic is always very welcoming and professional and I would encourage more direct feedback on the stressed questioning. The steak and ale pie is a firm favourite on our menu and has been for a very long time. I apologise if it has not been prepared to your satisfaction but feel it harsh to indicate this is a cause of your feeling poorly. The walk we recommend is a beautiful 5 mile wander through Burford and around the surrounding hills. I have never heard it called boring before. If there is any further help or explanation I can offer please contact me directly on manager@lambinn-burford.co.uk

Very very good lunch and a great place to have a stroll around. We met up with friends prior to going on to Bath and it was a very relaxing place to sit. Even although the Chef had to go home ill they were not phased by this at all and went to their sister hotel next door for the food

We go to the Cheltenham racing festival every March and usually stay in Stow. For a change we decided to stay in Burford and chose the Lamb and I am glad we did.
The hotel was great and cosy (we especially liked the resident lounges and log fires), the staff very friendly (the receptionist even ran after us on the Thursday to tell us of an accident on the A40 saving us an hour in a traffic jam), and good food (even if the dinner portions were not over generous).
Our standard room was small but fine as it was only a base and the small issue we had with the room was readily sorted and we got an apology directly from the manager - I thought this was very good service, showed real customer care and was much appreciated. We may not have picked too many winners at the races but we definitely picked a winner with The Lamb - we have already rebooked for next year!
