“Our first visit and certainly not our last”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013 via mobile

We visit Burford and surrounding area several times a year but we had never been to the Bull before. I was most impressed with the website initially and the tempting menu so we booked dinner for the evening of Thursday 3 January. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the owners who were friendly and accommodating and we had pre-dinner drinks in the cosy bar area. The restaurant has character, was warm and there aren't many places these days that have lovely starched table linen which is a plus for me! Dinner was lovely and well paced - we had scallops on celeriac with crispy shallot rings, then I had gilthead bream with delicious new potatoes and salad whilst my partner had succulent venison with red cabbage, a pastry tartlet and chestnuts. The homemade bread selection was delicious as was the homemade icecream (particularly the liquorice) and sorbets We would have loved to have been able to fit in a cheese course, but were too full on this occasion. We will definitely be revisiting soon and will most probably also book to stay in the hotel as the welcome, service and food were excellent.

“Charmless.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

Had the great misfortune of entering this charmless place on New Year's Day They were advertising coffee and teas and so 4 adults and 4 children sat down. Oh dear, no welcome, certainly no New year greetings from 3 charmless staff who clearly wished we were not there, especially the children.

To be honest we should have left.

3 tepid hot chocolates, 2 insipid cappuccino and 2 black coffee supplemented by the smallest glass of lemonade I have ever seen served, came to an astronomical £23...but on this New Year's day no welcome and no smiles.

The Bull may be number 1 in Burford on trip advisor, but frankly I cannot see why.

I get around and remain astounded by the lack of welcome you find in most placesin the UK. This is another example of the desperate state of English hospitality. AVOID!!

“contains no artificial flavourings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2012

Everything here is homemade - even the cheese crackers. Breakfast is superb and lots of it! Scallops were succulent, vegetables imaginitively presented. Icecream yummy. Wines sensibly priced too. Very good value.

“Fabulous food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

Duck was pink and delicious veg and sauce cooked to perfection. Service was first class and the choice of wines was varied and something for every budget. My Sauvignon Blanc was a Marlborough under £30 crisp light and beautiful flavour. Could not fault anything so thankyou for a wonderful dining experience
