“Charming English inn with lovely decor and excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2011

We recently stayed at the Burford House hotel on a driving tour around the Cotswolds. It was conveniently located on Burford‘s High Street (ie. the town’s much photographed street) and was easy to find. We booked through the hotel’s website at a rate which also included a full cooked breakfast. Here are the highlights of our stay:

1. Location- If you are looking for a cozy, historic hotel in a Cotswolds town that has good shops and restaurants, the Burford House is your place!
2. Décor- I loved the elegant English interior. It was well furnished and charming. We chose our room from the hotel’s website photos and went for the “Sherbourne” room which had a 4-poster bed. While we appreciated the room’s Tudor atmosphere, it was located at the very top of three flights of stairs (ie. something to note if you have heavy bags since there is no elevator).
3. Toiletries- I love upscale toiletries and was extremely happy with Burford House's choice of Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet shampoo, lotion, bath gel, etc...
4. Service- We were well looked after by Sarah who gave us a variety of restaurant recommendations, brought ice and advised about parking.
5. Food- Our breakfast at the Burford House was excellent and featured bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes, eggs and toast. In addition, there was a buffet with yogurt, fruit and cereal.
6. Wifi- There was complimentary internet access.
7. Parking- We were there in late Nov. and were able to park on the street across the street from the hotel without charge.

The only real drawback to our night at the Burford House was the street noise. Although we had a room at the very top of the hotel and there were double windows, our room faced the main thoroughfare through Burford. It was busy and loud regardless of the hour with trucks, cars, and motorcycles roaring past. I would really recommend booking a room that does not face the High Street!

Room Tip: Definitely get a room that does not face the High Street which is super noisy

We really needed a relaxing weekend away and was very lucky to come across BURFORD HOUSE, it was highly recommended on different sites but was fully booked, however we asked them to call us if they had a cancellation, the two owners are absolutely charming and knowledgable, they actually called us a couple of days before to say they had had a cancellation and it was gorgeous. We normally go for a modern hotel but driving into Burford you felt completely relaxed and the hotel is in the quaintest of high streets, surrounded by antique shops and tea rooms, everyone is so friendly. We were recommended to surrounding restaurants and went to the ship in southrop which was real gastro pubby food and fab, overall it was great ( we had the four poster room ) GORGEOUS.

Room Tip: Four poster room fab bathroom but shower over bath not seperate shower

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at Burford House Hotel. What a lovely establishment! Superb period features, lovely rooms and excellent service. The Hotel is situated in a great location in the hub of Burford, which has some wonderful shops and a number of fascinating buildings, which ooze with history. We ate at the Hotel on the first night, which we felt was very good value for money, if a little too generous on the portion size ( being hyper critical) we had a wonderful meal on the second night at "The Lamb" just around the corner in Sheep Street, within easy walking distance (even in November) Be prepared however to pay £100 for dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine..... Well worth it though. We have stayed at a lot of quality Hotels around the UK and we would happily endorse BH Hotel as being right up there amongst the best we have stayed in. The staff are very experienced and enthusiastic, but having had a long discussion on the Saturday night with Ian Hawkins (BHH Owner) it is easy to see where they get their
passion and drive from! All in all a great stay and we very much look forward to returning in the future.
PS. Burford is beautiful!

It's not just the driving that can be daunting for non-UK'ers on a visit to the Cotswolds. Selection of towns to visit, many of which seem to share "the most beautifu",...or "charming" appellation, and accommodations at which to stay, although not physically dangerous, is equally challenging! Burford, quiet and quaint, does not have the bustle of Broadway, Chipping Campden, Cirencester, for instance, but it was a nice base between our arrival in Stratford and our departure from Oxford eight days later from which to immerse ourselves in Cotswolds villages, gardens, points of interest and antiquity. Burford House provided access, comfort, and value. A "Main Street" establishment, traffic noise was no problem; parking might have been had we driven our own vehicle. Neatly compact, the sitting room(s) were charming and well supplied with visitor literature. The delightful dining area, decorated with Broadway (USA ) musical posters was woefully empty on both weekday nights of our stay; the menu was appealing, but the dinners were expensive. We opted for "cheaper" local pub fare, which was fine and delivered with enthusiasm at a similarly quiet establishment. At breakfast, the Buford dining room was bustling with guests enjoying a well presented and served almost-full English breakfast. In general, the staff, whom we encountered very infrequently and who seemed to be different at each of these encounters, were efficient, if not really personable! Our upstairs, side-street room was comfortable, clean, well-furnished with amenities (tea, biscuits, toiletries, etc.) and reading materials. The bathroom was comprehensive! As well as from noise, insulation from morning sunlight was easily accomplished.
Should one choose to devote a night or two or three in Burford, I would certainly recommend the Burford House as the place to lodge.

Just returned from a weekend away at this lovely hotel, which is home from home. The Manager Ian and all the staff are extremely friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. The lounges are cosy and comfortable, the ensuite bedroom, with its enormous four poster bed very clean and tastefully furnished. The restaurant is full of ambience and the home cooked food absolutely mouthwatering and delicious with excellent service.
The walled garden is extremely pleasant and an ideal place to sample a wonderful afternoon tea.
I cannot rate this hotel highly enough and would recommend it to anyone. It is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful Cotswolds but it is also a wonderful place for a quiet, romantic break.
Burford House Hotel please accept our thanks for a superb weekend and please rest assured we will return!
