Stayed at the Belfry for three nights for a conference and tabletop exhibition. This is a 4* hotel, part of a small group of 20 odd hotels, Q Hotels, not related to the original Sutton Coldfield Belfry where the golf championships are held.
The style of the hotel is modern and stylish, rather like a Novotel, but with higher quality fittings. The rooms are spacious and very well fitted with a double bed with feather mattress topper and comfortable duvet and pillows. No waterproof mattress cover which are my pet hate, hooray.
The bathroom had bath, separate shower basin and loo. All very clean and modern. Big thick towels in generous quantity.
Thermostatic radiator giving comfortable heat and a window that can be opened. Not sure if there would be air-conditioning in the bedrooms in the summer months.
The bar area branched off the lobby with a reasonable selection of drinks, though a only a single keg bitter and no ales. Service was adequate with a bonus that the night porter kept serving until 04:00 one night for a modest tip.
The conference facilities were close access at one end of the lobby with good seating, projectors and air-conditioning. Aircon was set to 28 C in the morning to warm the rooms up, but I soon set them back down to 18 C to save us suffocating. The conference buffet lunches lacked imagination.
We ate in the Lawrence restaurant for breakfast each day and for dinner one evening. The breakfast buffet was very high quality with excellent fresh hot English breakfast or an adequate selection of cereals, pastries, fruit etc. A few items such as boiled or poached eggs or porridge could be made to order. The breakfast was included in our room rate.
The evening dinner which we had in the Lawrence restaurant was truly excellent, far higher quality than I had expected for a hotel of this kind. Both the starters and main dishes were superbly prepared and presented with excellent flavours and textures. The red Zinfandel wine was also a highlight. Shame this same wine is not offered in the bar.
We used the gym and pool in the adjacent spa area. It was well equipped and very clean with a 12m pool and hot tub and a good selection of gym equipment.
Overall an excellent hotel from a small group that is trying very hard to give a better quality than some of the big groups with some of the individuality of a boutique hotel. Well recommended.
