“Lovely location, good value and when we stayed quiet...”
Reviewed November 28, 2010

Lovely location, good value and when we stayed quiet, but given the location, the venue is popular with weddings and other events - large marquee in the grounds.

Service was excellent, the receptionist checked us in and took us to our room - what more can you ask for. Our room was great 208 - large and superb bathroom - our friends room was smaller which was a shame. We did not use the restaurant in the evening, but breakfast was really good. It was -7c in Nottingham and the public areas including the restaurant were chilly.

There was one small problem - we booked on line and had a fair price £99 including breakfast - but check the small print - the default booking for a double room was for single occupancy and they wanted to charge for an extra breakfast - the receptionist soon sorted it out with good grace.

Having stayed in Nottingham many times over the past three years I have not been able to find a hotel that I want to go back to until now.
By booking on line you get an exceptional rate. There is stacks of parking spaces, the staff are friendly and the restaurant is first class if you like Malaysian food.
The building has stacks of character in a lovely quiet situation with Nottingham racecourse to the front and gardens and a lake to the rear.
The Executive rooms are big with large well equipped bathrooms, the room has a plasma tv and all the bits and pieces you would want for a short stay.
The beds are comfortable but the pillows are small and hard, they really are awful.
Breakfast is a bit spartan but they will fresh-cook anything you ask for as a full English.
I will quite happily stay again but will call in advance and ask for something to be done about the pillows

We stayed here the night of our wedding and I arrived here in the afternoon to get ready with my bridesmaids.
The experience really began while trying to book the hotel. We needed the room to be availble for a 1pm check in in order to get ready. The member of staff on reception was quite unhelpful and when my husband asked to speak to the manager he said he was the manager. When we checked out, it transpired that this was complete and utter rubbish!
Eventually, after numerous calls and a little persistance, we were allowed to have a room where we could check in at 1pm.
We also asked if we could have a complimentary upgrade as it was our wedding day and were told it probably wouldn't be available which we fully understood, only to find out when checking out (from the very nice and helpful receptionist) that if she had of known it was our wedding day she would of made sure to upgrade us, rather than the couple she did upgrade who "didn't even seem greatful or bothered about it!".
The room we had was quite small, infact pretty crapmed, but had the normal room facilities. There was no air-conditioning but a fan was provided.
We did have photos taken of the bridal party at the hotel, which again didn't seem to go down to well. We were told that we could only go to the grounds at the back of the hotel for a few minutes due to an event taking place later. Again I fully appreciate an event taking place but by the time we left for the registry office no event had begun and we were hardly beng intrusive!
We were told the issues we had raised would be investigated but have never heard anything since!!
The hotel is very "good looking" and the grounds are very pretty with fountains (one of the main reasons in choosing the property). The majority of the staff couldn't be more helpful. It's a shame when the minority who lie to customers spoil it.
Although this didn't ruin our day, by no means, it's the little touches and excellent service that always make an impact, which is why we will never be going back there or recommending this hotel to anybody we know, especially for weddings!

A little bit odd, but really quite nice. Huge room with good toileteries, gowns, tea coffee etc. Really enjoyed the malaysian restaurant. Good value too at £69 through late rooms. Yeah. I shall stay there again

This is an excellent little hotel. It looks great and our room was far better then one would expect for the price. The bathroom was enormous and imaginatively furnished. We had a for poster bed, flat screen TV with DVD. The food in the resteraunt was imaginative and very tastey, as well as being excellent value. I would totally recomend this hotel for a romantic get away.

An amazing building with unusual but excellent rooms. Our second floor room was in the eaves and had only a tiny window which looked out onto a section of the roof but the room was beautiful and the bathroom was huge with double hand basins and a bath up steps(no good if you were very tall as your head would touch the ceiling when you showered!) All the facilities in the room were good and my only complaint would be the reading lights are too short and too dull for bedtime reading.
Our family stayed in one of the suites looking out to the gardens, ahuge room with an enormous bathroom, really excellent.
Location is right on the race course on one side with lakes and parkland on the other yet only minutes from Mottingham centre.

The restaurant serves Malay food on an inclusive menu, we thoroughly enjoyed it but after a couple of nights some might find it limiting.

A fascinating hotel, with a long history, once the home of Lord Byron, and survived the English Civil War! Delightful 60 acre grounds, and worth taking a long walk round the lakes.Certainly a very interesting place to stay, and a very reasonable price too. We had an excellent 3 course Malaysian menu meal, with a complimentary glass of wine, and at typical pub prices. Staff were very good, and only criticism was the central heating was too high for us!
