Owner description: Wollaton Hall is one of the country's finest Grade One listed Elizabethan mansions, set within 500 acres of beautiful parkland. Experience stunning architecture, exhibitions, a packed events program and an array of wildlife. Go behind the scenes on a variety of guided tours available throughout the year and on demand for groups. Other special events include costumed tours, puppet shows, craft fairs, Segway tours and our popular spooky Ghost Nights (not for the faint hearted!). Visit the Cafe in the Courtyard for light refreshments including freshly ground coffee, specialty teas and home made cakes.

Literally millions of pounds have been spent on Wollaton Hall & grounds in 2007 (things were looking quite neglected before that) now here is a great coffee shop, acres of walks and a lake to suit everyone - there is even wild red deer roaming around! There is a large lake, golf course, and the oldest glass house in Europe. The Hall itself has had a lot of money spent on it but I think they could have done more - the building is so amazing and unique that they should have thought a bit more about making the inside more special - I don't think they could decide with whether to keep it full of stuffed animals or to dress the rooms as they used to be - so they did both!!! One hidden gem is the great Ballroom on the top floor but I think this can only be viewed by appointment only? Wollaton Hall is a great day out, you won't regret it, and I think the hall is free to get in (not sure if this is all year round) so you should definately go in and have a look round - worth it just for the stuffed Giraffe & Gorilla - kids will love it too

Externally, the hall is an attractive - although slightly crumbling - old building in an impressive natural setting.

Parking facilities are good, and cost only £2.00 for an entire day - although few are likely to need to take full advantage. Disabled parking for permit holders is available directly outside the hall, which is perched at the highest point of the park.

Disabled access to the hall is via lift from ground level into basement, then another lift from the basement into the main floors of the hall.

Unfortunately, the hall itself is a faded version of its former glory. Many exhibits appear to be inactive or under renovation, with things hidden under dust sheets.

The multiple rooms devoted to exhibits of animals which were lovingly shot and stuffed, will not appeal to animal lovers, although the hall management have made an attempt at addressing some of those concerns in the children's story accompanying the exhibit of 'George' the gorilla.

Elsewhere, the exhibits of crystals, gems and fossils were presented in an uninspiring manner, and there was little in the way of interactive exhibits to appeal to a younger audience, or information to give context to the objects. No staff were on hand to assist or inform.

There are some interesting artworks displayed on some of the walls, but the lighting is so poor that they cannot be easily appreciated, particularly the large mural covering the walls and ceiling of the main staircase.

The deer are also part of the attraction to Wollaton Hall, but these are in a fenced-off area, and are not immediately adjacent to the car park. One can walk into the area where the deer roam, but a notice warns, rather ominously, that dogs worrying deer may be shot.

The Industrial Museum on site closes at 4pm, but last admission is 3.30pm, meaning that we had just missed seeing it, so I cannot review it. Therefore, on the day that we chose to visit, the gift shop turned out to be more fun than the hall itself.

In summary, I would not recommend that anyone make a special trip to Wollaton Hall, given that Britain does not have a shortage of stately homes and other historic attractions. The main audience for the hall is likely to be school tour groups, however, this is more than likely to be due to proximity and convenience - there are no compelling reasons to visit.
