The standard double we were allocated on the first floor overlooked a roof. The room was small by any standard although it did have a large king size bed that took up most of the floor space. I had requested a room with a bath and wonder whether in this ‘Eco friendly’ hotel baths are frowned upon so they relegate them to the worst rooms? When I mentioned my disappointment with the room to the young Spanish receptionist he kindly offered us an upgrade. He showed us an Executive room on the third floor that would normally cost £85 without breakfast, twenty pounds more than the standard room. We accepted, then he told us it would be complimentary which we thought was a lovely gesture,
The hotel is furnished in the 1950’s ‘contemporary’ style, which seems to be the fashion nowadays. Greens, oranges, and yellows. In each room there is a wall size mural of trees. Our room had French windows. The curtains material was grey, not unlike ex -army blankets, however they looked surprisingly good. The rooms were well equipped with a safe, iron, and ironing board, coffee, tea, and biscuits, there was a large flat screen TV, and free wi fi.
We had dinner in the hotel’s Brasserie. The menu was interesting, and both the food and the house wine were excellent. The staff got it just right. Friendly, attentive, but not in your face.
We had breakfast at the hotel too. It was a buffet style. Plenty to choose from with especially good scrambled eggs. The coffee was not great. It wasn’t made freshly for you but stood on the side in large metal jugs, as did the tea. The breakfast waitresses were friendly and efficient noticing when your cup was empty etc.
This hotel is an ideal choice if you have to attend the conference centre (which is only a few metres away), or are visiting a student at Nottingham University, because the hotel is situated on the campus. This hotel is not a ideal if you are visiting Nottingham City Centre because it is situated a few miles away. It cost us £9 in a taxi to get to the Castle (without tip).
