When you have booked and paid 3 months in advance, when you are a member of the Rewards scheme, when you've booked a hotel that describes the grounds at great length and when you are not last to check in, it is disappointing to be put in a noisy room, over the kitchens with no view (literally no view as the windows were above head height). We arrived at 5.15 after a 3-4 hour drive up from Southampton and just wanted a quiet rest for a couple of hours before going into Nottingham for a concert. There was a noisy metallic clanging sound that went on for about 10 minutes then stopped, then started again and carried on. When, after about an hour, we complained at reception, we were told that they would investigate the noise. Having had no answer to our complaint, when we went out about an hour later, we asked at reception and were asked if the noise was still going on. We said it was worse and sounded like kitchen noise. We were told that we were nowhere near the kitchen. When we came back about midnight, we were told that we were right over the kitchen and that they think the noise may have been a fridge and did we want to move rooms. As it was midnight and we were assured that there would be no more noise, we didn't bother. The next morning we were told that there had been a cancellation which is why we could have moved rooms at midnight, but weren't offered this option earlier. I would have thought that room 14 would be a last resort given to people checking in late. Other than this the hotel was fine, the room was a good size and clean. Breakfast was OK - Wendy who served breakfast was lovely and friendly.

Room Tip: Avoid room 14.

Stayed in this intriguing building for 1 night with friends. Unfortunately, most of the staff were unfriendly and it was difficult to raise a smile from them - apart from the lovely lady who served our breakfast. She engaged with us in a friendly and helpful manner and was the one shining light amongst the personnel, who gave the impression that they were doing you a huge favour simply by being there!
Our room was tired, and the wifi was useless, as was the tv, which kept freezing. The bathroom was outdated and the shower was awful - difficult to control the temperature and almost impossible to get wet, so meagre was the flow. The pillows were hard and uncomfortable.
We had dinner in the restaurant and had high hopes of an excellent meal, especially when served the starters, which were delicious. However the bread which should have accompanied the first course arrived when we had all finished our starters, and then 5 of the main courses turned up together, the 6th arriving some 5 minutes later, leaving one of the party twiddling their thumbs while the others began their meals! 3 of the party had steaks, which were tough, tasteless and hardly warm, and the vegetarian meal was excessively salty and included some "vegetable crisps", which seemed to consist of greasy batter with nothing much inside! What wasn't made very clear was that the main courses (ranging in price from £14.50 to £18.50) did not include much in the way of vegetables, and it would have been helpful for the waiter to ask if we required any extra veg with our meals at the time of ordering. It is difficult to complain about poor food when the trip has been booked for you and you don't wish to embarrass your hosts, so we felt we could not make a fuss at the time.
As previously said, our breakfast waitress was lovely, and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was only average, with a poor selection of fresh fruit and no plain yogurt, and the cooked breakfast components (for self service) were swimming in grease. I ordered and was served with a freshly cooked egg.
For what we paid, this was a very disappointing stay. Having stayed recently in a Premier Inn for the first time and being very impressed with the quality, I can only suggest that the staff at Bestwood Lodge learn from the friendly and helpful staff we encountered there - service with a smile goes such a long way to making guests feel welcome and valued, and attention to detail (like choice of pillows, spotlessly clean rooms and fantastic showers) transform a hotel stay from less than satisfactory to excellent and worthy of recommendation.

I had no idea that arriving at the Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel would be more fun in person than in the photos. Because of the age of the structure, I did not expect structural perfection or modern conveniences that are often available in more modern properties. I did expect it to be a bit musty, internet to be slow if available at all and I expected it to have small rooms. Anytime, I decide to forego the 4 - 5 star chain or boutique property, I always also decide to lower my expectations a bit. Any lack of modern convenience or newness that this place lacks, is made up by sheer astonishment at the structure. Even upon arriving up the long and curvy drive to the property grounds, I was amazed that we were going to get to stay in this beautiful piece of architecture. A true castle that was built in the 1100's. A place that Edward the III was said to use as a hunting lodge during trips to Sherwood Forest. And within five miles of all of the fun that Nottingham city has to offer was what I got. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful and the breakfast was just what we wanted for a day of sight seeing. Beds were comfortable and despite the age of the facility, everything was clean. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Room 29 is a family room and has a nice view of the gardens. It is a bit difficult to find and feel...

Our first stay in the hotel since we chose it for our daughter's wedding reception in 2003. Check in was pleasant and a taxi had been ordered as requested (however do not use this taxi firm number 011594200400 as their call centre staff when we tried to book a return trip we found to be rude). Room 20a which was a little tired and needs some TLC and with a tiny TV high up on the wall which I hate however the bathroom was nice and and shower water was hot. Plastic cups, none working alarm clock, TV channels not all tuned in / working and thin bath towels let it down. We did not have dinner in the hotel however breakfast is pretty poor, table linen not clean and what food there was ran out on a number of occassions. Again the waiting staff did their best so it's the kitchen at fault. Check out ok if not exactly over friendly. The hotel is in a beautiful location which brought back many happy memories from 10 years ago however I am sure "back then2 it was a much nicer and classier establishment, Like many of us - it is showing it's age! Yes a hotel with personality but not sure if it is one I would return to. The staff raised it from a 2 star to a 3 star so the hotel should thank them for their efforts!

Room Tip: 20a is a little worn but was quiet.

Stayed here for a work trip with colleagues. Hotel is mostly clean, few to many hairs in the bathroom though.

Had dinner one night in hotel. Service was very slow but the food was very good. If you are not in a hurry they certainly worth trying.

Staff all friendly.

We have stayed at Bestwood Lodge on a number of occasions. It is an oasis of service close to the centre of Nottingham, set in an extensive park. I think it used to be a royal hunting lodge hundreds of years ago. The building still retains the feel of the past with high ceilings in the bar and restaurant. and tasteful decoration. Bedrooms are comfortable. There is even a four poster bed in one of them, which we enjoyed on one visit. Food in the restaurant has always been good, but on our last visit was exceptionally well presented and still excellent value for money. Looking forward to going back there again next time we are in the area.

Room Tip: For a special treat try the four poster bed.

i have stayed on three occasions.
First time room was quite good but breakfast was poor
Second time room was poor and there was no hot water at night,. I complained and was told it would be sorted. On morning I ran tap for two minutes and there was no hot. I was offered dreadful breakfast at no cost.
Third time I had a cold room with paint peeling off the ceiling.

I ate a formal dinner there last week. Starter was OK. Steak was beyond poor and dreadfully presented. I met some guests the next day. One got up to take rennies in the night. Nobody I spoke to thought the food other than poor.

I cancelled my last reservation made by staff. Go nowhere near the place is my advice.

Room Tip: Room 6 is good
