“Pleasantly suprised”
Reviewed March 19, 2012

Having read the mixed reviews for this pub we visited for lunch with mixed feelings, but happily were very pleasantly suprised. A traditional no frills one room pub, with no juke box or television and selling an excellent range of beers.

My partner had the scotch egg & found it excellent and the large antipasto platter was also very good. Would definately visit again but would probably reserve a table as despite arriving at 12 this place filled up very quickly with a lot of people having lunch and the atmosphere was really pleasant.

“What has happened to the Keans Head”
Reviewed December 1, 2011

Not been for a while and it will be a long time before we visit again. No heating on at all. Cold. Got there at lunch time and waited 35 minutes for the food, ours being only the second order. The sausage and mash was lukewarm when it came out and could not bite through the ciabatta on the burger. Two guys after us had sausage and mash and they had eaten it all when their veg was served. The toilets have more cobwebs on the ceiling than draculas castle. Beer very good though. This is such a shame as we loved coming here. Its as though someone has stopped caring about the place.

“Tip top, smashing beer and great food”
Reviewed November 30, 2011

Looking for somewhere to eat before a show at the arena, it would be hard to improve on this place and only 5 minutes away.
Wide range of beers for the discerning drinker. Good non corporate menu, with most of the ingredients sourced locally some within 2 miles.
Staff were excellent, we will certainly be returning here.

“Undercooked Scotch Egg Russian Roulette”
Reviewed March 31, 2011

Eaten here a couple of times in the past and had good pub grub. This time very poor. Meal ordered and paid for then 5 mins later told they'd sold the last one already, so ordered the 'special' Keans Head scotch egg instead, with side of chips. Seemed a long wait till order arrived and not many other dishes coming out of kitchen.

Thought it odd that scotch egg had completely soft yolk - unusual - until biting into the sausage surround and finding it lukewarm, soft, gloopy, very undercooked. Don't think it was cooked long enough. Made the best of it by scooping out the stickiest sausagemeat and leaving it, as we didn't have time to reorder. Probably a high risk. Spent rest of evening sucking soft, sticky sausage out of teeth and wondering if I'll get food poisoning. And £4.50 for a scotch egg (chips extra) - not cheap.

Rare beef - yes, lamb - ok, sausage meat - NO. Stop doing it - you'll make someone ill.

Pub used to boast Italian influenced cooking too, but not much evidence now. Former landlady/cook has moved to a brewery HQ job - maybe this is why it's gone downhill.

OK for a drink, but eat elsewhere. Maybe Cock and Hoop round the corner?
