“Lovely family meal!”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Been going here for many years and visited Saturday night for my brothers birthday. Food was lovely, the starters are far better than the mains in our experience (my tip - order loads of these and less of the main course dishes). Also had sashmi and sushi platters for the table....the fish was really fresh - really good quality dishes. Could have done with more staff as it was a full house with only two people serving (and one is 8 months pregnant) so there was a bit of a wait for drinks. Really enjoyed it as always. Will go back!

“Perfect Restaurant”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

I've have visited Higoi on many occasions now (about 8 or 9), and each time I am made to feel extremely welcome. The staff are very polite, in a truly authentic Japanese manner. Of the times I have visited, I have been in both small groups (2-4) and large groups (10-12). Each time the restaurant catered very well for the group size. If you are planning on a large group meal, book in advance, the chef will also require menu choices in advance to make sure your dining experience isn't delayed waiting for long orders.

The food covers a variety of authentic Japanese dishes. There is the option to select a range of sushi and or sashimi pieces. Alternatively one can choose one of the selection of bento box style meals that give you a taste of different dishes. You can also chose from a range of tempura and noodle based dishes, should raw fish not be your palate. The food is excellent quality and very tasty, it also extremely enjoyable to wash it down with some warm sake.

The price reflects the quality of the food and restaurant. It is possible to have a very nice meal for less than £15, but if (like me) you find yourself wanting to sample all of the delights on offer and enjoy sake then you can easily spend up to £40. However, it is well worth it and you will find yourself wanting to go back in the future!

“Great little restaurant”
Reviewed February 1, 2013 via mobile

Came highly recommended by two friends who lived in Japan. Great food, great service. Whenever I pass near Nottingham I definitely drop in. The agadashi tofu and sashimi moriawase are to die for!

“Best Japanese food I've had outside Japan”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

I've stolen TimS1706's punchline - but he's not wrong!

The restaurant is small and unassuming, set in the heart of the student district of Lenton. I'd disagree with reviewers who describe this as a rough part of town: there's no problem parking on street round here. The decor is simple and appropriate, with a homely feel.

The Keiseki style dinner was less elaborate, but also considerably cheaper, than the native equivalent. It was also perfectly presented. This, or one of the other set menus is a great introduction to Japanese food - it isn't all raw fish!

Our cosmopolitan friends, who've lived in Japan, ordered a la carte and went for moriawase (assorted) sushi and tempura, plus some edamame, soft shell crab and gyoza. All excellent. The consensus was that the sushi here is better than we've managed to find elsewhere in the UK.

We tried the Shoin sake which was light, delicate, and very good value. If I was being picky I seem to remember it being served colder in Japan, but that's a minor detail.

I'm turning into a bit of a 'five star junkie', but I've been lucky eating out recently, and I would certainly recommend this restaurant.

“Fresh Sashimi and great local sushi!”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

A limited selection of japanese food but a reasonable selection of good sushi and sashimi. Fresh but noticing that the squids and the tuna is not at its peak on occassion. The soft shell crab maki is very good but is also variable depending o´n the freshness of the crab. Go with the iro-iro maki! Service is typically japanese, i.e. exceptional!
