“Great food, fantastic beer selection, lovely staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2014 via mobile

The food was delicious, the range of high quality beer was extensive, and the staff were super friendly. I can't recommend this place enough. It's a wonderful restaurant.

We visited with a party of 8 last night and at 11pm we ordered a couple of taxis from the bar. After 45 minutes the taxis hadn't arrived, so the amazing landlady gave us a lift home - 15 minutes drive away! We couldn't believe their kindness. So thank you - and to anyone reading, please do visit. You won't regret it. And I recommend the Shipyard Pale Ale.

We have just returned from what was a lovely stay at The Old Hall Inn. Our room was actually situated in the Paper Mill Inn across the road from The Old Hall Inn (owners have both pubs).

The stay was excellent with the room, an en suite double having a lovely large and very comfy bed, a nice modern bathroom and flat screen TV on the wall.

The Paper Mill was a quieter pub than the Old Hall Inn but still had a lovely atmosphere, log fires and a good range of ales and Belgium beers.

We ate at The Old Hall Inn. The pub / restaurant seemed full and we were glad that we had pre-booked a table at the time of booking. The food was excellent and plentiful.

Overall, it was a great stay. We will definitely go back and will try to stay for more than one night next time.

We stayed for two nights and had a room in the Old Hall Inn. Our room was a very large double with a balcony/terrace accessed from the bathroom which we used as we had bright weather despite storms wreaking havoc in the rest of the country. The bed was large and very comfortable. The added bonus was free wifi throughout the Inn. The signal was stronger in the bar than the room. We ate both nights at the Inn. The food is good pub food and the portions are large. The service is very good. The food comes quickly so on the second night we shared a starter. There are a good choice of wines which are reasonably priced, and an array of ales and beer. Breakfast for all is in the minstrels hall which is a beautiful dining area. Service again was very good. We took one of the suggested walks and my only criticism is that the maps provided are not clear enough and therefore you should do your own homework if you don't want to get lost. We had a lovely break, just what the doctor ordered after the hectic schedule over Christmas and the staff made us feel very welcome.

We stayed for two nights (Sunday and Monday) dining each night in the bar.

The welcome was very friendly and we were really pleased with our room. The Sunday roast was lovely and we appreciated the real ales on offer behind the bar. The atmosphere was good with lots of locals using the pub, which is a good sign. Most of them had their dogs with them which added to the atmosphere.
Our room was in the Paper Mill Inn, a separate building across the road from the Inn. This also has a bar and shows football, so allows you to choose where to drink your pint. We liked the open fires in that bar. The room we had was very clean and had a nice bed. We didn't spend long in it, as we were out walking in the nearby hills which are fantastic.
You elect what you'd like for your breakfast the night before. We liked this and thought the sausages were gorgeous.
We'd recommend a visit to the Old Hall Inn and think it would make a great local. We'll be looking for an excuse to come back. Thanks very much.

Room Tip: If you stay in the Paper Mill, you may hear noise from the bar / tv. This didn't bother us and w...

We stayed at Spring Cottage across the road from the Old Hall Inn & the Paper Mill - really enjoyed it. Cottage is spotless, cosy and very well equipped (short of a dishwasher perhaps?). Perfect for a family of four with two nice bedrooms (although you can hear a little traffic noise from the A6 in the distance in one of the bedrooms, but nothing much). Great location, beautiful and quiet but within walking distance of shops in the village. Should you need anything, Dan will see to it in a matter of minutes - literally! Great cottage for all weathers: sunny = make the most of the Peak District and enjoy a glass or barbecue in the rear garden, not so sunny = start a fire and watch a movie (great TV next to fireplace with DVD, IPlayer, Netflix, etc + TVs in the bedrooms upstairs). Highly recommended!

We have just returned from a two night stay at the Old Hall Inn with our accommodation in the Paper Mill pub. The room was spacious, very clean and comfortable with a very large bathroom and amenities of tea and coffee making facilities and flat screeen TV as standard. The road outside is only used for local traffic and the bar noise from below did not go on too late to disturb our sleep. We did pop in for one drink in the bar below and it was pleasantly furnished with a large TV for Sky football when needed. You can have tapas or the cheese board and there is a very good selection of beers.

However the main hive of activity is in the Old Hall Inn Bar which has a very lively atmosphere and is obviously well used by the locals (and their dogs!). My husband is a big Real Ale fan and he was really pleased with the choice and also the condition of the beers ( I have to pass on the technicalities of cellar keeping and clean lines!). There is also a very big choice of bottled beers, lagers and ciders. We ate both nights in the bar and the food was excellent both nights. From previous reviews we had taken the precaution of preordering the steak and ale puddings and were not disappointed. They were really delicious but neither of us could finish them so take my advice and don't order starters!

The breakfast (which you preorder the night before with the time you want it) was also excellent. The staff were a credit to the pub - when our bookings couldn't be found for the restaurant they soon sorted it out and when we forgot to hand in our breakfast choices the one night they sorted that out too for us in the morning. All the staff were pleasant and helpful.

There are walks recommended by the Pub for all levels (we did the easy one!) and the situation is a good one for exploring Buxton, Bakewell etc. We spent a very enjoyable afternoon at the Chestnut Centre, a small private zoo, which is not far from the pub where you can see otters and owls in particular.

We shall certainly hope to return to this excellent pub.

We stayed at the The Old Hall for a few nights - Great location for a walking break in the Peaks.
We had a room in the newly converted Peppermill building just across the road from the main pub. Very cosy and comfortable. Great breakfasts, good food and beer. Very friendly and helpful staff.

A busy pub / restaurant that seems to have been built up to be the centre of the community

We recommend a stay at this Pub
