“Always our pub of choice!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

Living in the Peak District we have our fair share of pubs nearby but the Old Hall is by far our favourite! They have a select but varied menu and a great selection of specials which aren't always what you'd expect in a country pub. The food is always excellent quality (the chips, burgers and steak with cheese sauce are especially good) and good value for money considering the large portion sizes. Personally I'm not an ale drinker which the pub is known for, but they have a great selection of wine.

I've seen a fair few comments on here about iffy service - I would have to completely disagree. Every time we've been the waitresses are friendly, attentive and welcoming, even when it's been busy such as Valentines Day and Christmas Eve. Service is admittedly slower when it's busy but I'd expect that anywhere - and the food is definitely worth waiting for!

We're local to the area and use this pub frequently to sample the excellent beers and ciders. Earlier this week we decided to sample the food. Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. I went for the rump steak, which whilst perfectly cooked and seasoned by the chef, was completely flavourless and too tough to digest (accepting that rump is always a more robust cut). I left most of it after giving up the fight. The service however was the main problem. We were originally attended by a very friendly and helpful waitress but when she went off-shift we were ignored by the second waitress who was completely disinterested. We weren't offered further drinks, asked if we had enjoyed our meal, shown the desert menu or offered teas and coffee. Whilst we always like to support local business, if guests to the area asked for a dining recommendation, we would have to direct them toward the Swan in Kettleshulme.

This is a difficult review to respond to, so i've copied below our direct response to the customer who left the review.

Hi, i'm Dan, the landlord of the Old Hall Inn. As you would expect i'm very very disappointed to here of your experience. You have my full apologies for the lack of service you received.

We buy our steaks from Mac Burnham's, they are hung for a month and we pay top dollar to ensure that we only get the best steaks. All said, naturally we occasionally get a steak that might be tougher or less flavoursome than what we would hope for.

Had my member of staff being doing their job correctly, they would have asked you shortly after having started to check the meal was ok, we would then have been aware and cooked you a fresh steak immediately. This clearly not being the case i would be grateful for the opportunity to cook you another steak on the house, as our general feedback (and our intentions certainly) is that our steaks are very good.

The lack of service is particularly disappointing to hear, and completely unforgivable. As a team we work really hard in this area, and as a rule i'm very proud of my staff who work very hard and with good humour.

I politely request a few details of your visit (time & date) and who came over as disinterested. The information will be treated with the strictest confidence, and will not lead to a telling off of any one member of staff, but will allow me to ensure that this is a one off instance.

Poor reviews are massively damaging to our business, as well as a personal disappointment, and your help in providing those few details will help enormously.

I hope that you will continue to enjoy our beers, and that you will take up my offer of a free steak (and a beer!)

Best intentions
Dan

Although I have to say Chinley is not the most exciting place in the world it is well worth staying at the Old Hall Inn. The food, service, accomodation and choice of beers was excellent. It was my wife'sbirthday/retirement treat and I could not have chosen better. We had a room in the Paper Mill and it was warm, spacious and above a pub! What more could you want!

Thank you for writing a review, i'm pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. The Old Hall Inn & Paper Mill Inn are based in the quaint little hamlet of Whitehough just on the outside of Chinley, with great walking country on the door step. We are around 10 mins from some famous picture postcard villages such as Castleton and Edale where the pennine way starts (or one stop on the picturesque railway line, making a great walk back over Kinder!)

First visit here and were looking forward to it. All went well with table reservation - nice table reserved for us 2 adults and two children. Things got a bit shaky when taking drinks order, waitress failed to enquire what type of white wine or offer any suggestions / recommendations. As an establishment that appeared to pride itself as being a real ale place the waitress fell flat on her face again with regards to having any knowledge of what ale was available. Food was very good, no complaints or issues there. Children's food was good as well. Things took a dip again when the bill arrived. Incorrectly charged for children's meals. In itself not a major issue, but the inexperience of dealing with such an issue again showed through. Comments like this is 'just' a mistake, its never happened before and the person entering order into till misread the info just doesn't work for me. A destination venue such as this should pride itself in its service. It's always a shame when the front of house staff lack the skills and expertise required. Paying minimum wage with minimal training for staff interacting directly with customers is shortsighted when trying to capitalise of a significant investment. Would we return, probably for the food, but clearly we would be on top of what beer/ wine was available and alert to checking the bill line by line.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Country Pub. Your service experience doesn't match what we would hope and/or expect from a visit to the Old Hall Inn. Your assumptions about staff training and minimum wage are both inaccurate. We do take great pride in our ale and wine offer, making it particularly disappointing to hear of your experience.

Our beers change hourly during busy service, so the front of house staff may get out of date at times, however we are an informal pub, and part of experience for many of our customers is choosing and indeed sampling at the bar. That said, we would expect to be able to advise on the beers at the table also. The new member of staff in this case wasn't, but by now she will be talking like she's been drinking ale all her life... : )

I hope there will be a second visit, and that we better meet your expectations.
Best Regards
Dan

Location: Lovely old building in a nice village location.Car park 1 minute away
Rooms : Spotless,comfortable and cozy ( we were in room 3 ).
Food : A lovely choice, all of which ( that we tried ) was superb. If you can get a table in the Hall which just adds to the ambience.
The "Pub" lovely mix of all types, locals ,tourists ( us and a few more ) visitors from a few miles away who had come to sample some of the new ales ( very well kept and tended ).
Staff:So Pleasan and, helpful which made our stay so enjoyable,
Dan : Manager what a surprise to see such a "old" head on a young body with great ideas and a care for his job that sadly lacks in other places.
All in all forget the reviews and go there. Advice (from Dan ) ring direct if you are thinking of booking online.....wink...wink.

The Old Hall Inn and the Paper Mill Inn are next to each other in the quaint village of Chinley, less than a mile from the railway station, run by the same team, Dan and colleagues, all lovely. Great walking. The staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to help you. Food is very high quality standard pub fare with many real ales (10+) and excellent freshly cooked breakfasts. Great croissants and coffee. The only downside to the Paper Mill is technical and to do with the rooms being newly done up: fire alarms are over sensitive; the closing mechanisms on the doors are over-stiff and mean that a young child or old person will not be able to open it; the locks on the cupboard doors are too stiff, as are the draws of the desks. The showers are feeble. There is an irritating and bright green light in the room which may affect your sleep. These seem minor points and they are. But all together they make the rooms irritating. They are sortable. We would also recommend the Bombay Cafe in the village when you want a change from pub food. Take you own booze. We would definitely go to the Old Hall Inn or Paper Mill Inn again

Thank you for the review, and we look forward to welcoming you back. The rooms are new as you suggest, and we have addressed some of the minor points you made. Regarding the fire alarms, a log off the down stairs fire had toppled off and smoked and caused the alarm to go off, a resident had then broken the fire glass panic alarm thinking it might turn off the alarm, which then took us 5/10 minutes to realise what they had done. It was easily fixed once we realised what the problem was, and was no fault of the alarm system. The doors closers are firm to meet modern fire regulations, and although its not been mentioned by other guests before, there is no denying the doors feel substantial. I thank you for your feedback, and am delighted to hear you enjoyed your few days with us.
