Visited with three family members for a birthday meal, the table was booked for 8, but we arrived at half seven, this was not a problem, shown straight to the table and given the menus and delicious fresh bread. We selected the house Pinot Grigio, it was delicious and at c. £14 a bottle, reasonably priced. We were given plenty of time to look over the menu, and once we had selected, the starters arrived after 10-15 minutes. The waited came back after a few moments to say the 1/2 duck one of the party had ordered would not be available, due to a mistiming in the kitchen, but offered an alternative dish, no problem really.
My twice beaked souffle was delicious, as was the chicken liver pate I also sampled. The table was cleared of side plates and spare cutlery in readiness for our mains (dirty plates cluttering up the table are a bug bear of mine, so I was very happy!) and a candle that had gone out was replaced. The mains were ready promptly, large portions accompanied by plenty of potatoes and veg, about halfway through the waiter offered the party more sauces for their individual dishes, a nice touch which shows the attention to detail. We ordered a second bottle of wine which was poured for us, again a nice touch, rather than just being put on the table.
The meals really were delicious, a great balance of flavours, and well presented. We were given a rest to let our meals settle before we selected puddings, three of us going for the brandy snap baskets which were divine! As we had exchanged gifts at the start of the meal, the birthday girl's pudding arrived with a candle in the top, again another little extra which added to a lovely dining experience. Although we were the only people left in the restaurant, we were not rushed to leave the table , and when we produced a 10% discount voucher, the amount was discreetly removed from the bill, and we never felt like it was an inconvenience at all. The bill originally to came to £136, for 4 starters, 4 mains (including a huge Sirloin steak) three puddings and two bottles of wine, so not cheap, but by no means extravagant, and for the portions and quality of the food, certainly no complaints.
