Good access. Friendly staff. Interesting small museum and shop. No rough ground to cope with. Well worth a stop off. Good parking.

A Roman fort site on Hadrian's wall: The workmanship and design of the bath house is fascinating, 2 barrack blocks and gateways still very obvious, the outline of Commanders' house and bridge are across the river. I was particularly impressed by the drainage and sewerage systems, they are ingenious. The Romans were truly a great nation of builders, designers and soldiers. The original museum has an amazing display of artefacts.

Another very large Roman fort site on the wall: bath house is fascinating, barrack blocks, gateways, outline of Commanders' house, bridge abutments are accessible for free from the other side of the river(and the bridge was once majestic). The huge pieces of sculpture and smaller finds are displayed in a thematic but original manner in the original museum, just as Clayton (the man who saved the wall from total destruction) wanted -you could spend days here. The museum is an exhibit in itself.

Chesters Roman Fort was a fascinating visit, a look back into history at Britain under Roman rule. The museum is full of artifacts that have been unearthed at the site & along Hadrian's Wall. The fort itself must have been an impressive sight back in Roman times too.

English Heritage presents Roman history really well, if the displays etc are now just a little jaded. Not as good as nearby Vindolanda but the 20's feel to the Museum is great, takees you back to those people who originally excavated the site.
