Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

This Roman fort is still being excavated, which makes it a fascinating place to visit. If you can time your visit to coincide with one of the free guided tours, you will learn a lot. The site opens at 10am and the first tour is at 10.45 - well worth it! We learned a lot from our enthusiastic volunteer.
Make the effort to visit the on-site museum at the bottom of the site - it is absolutely fascinating too.
If you like Roman history, this is a must see.
We bought a double ticket and also visited the Roman Museum about 8 miles west of this site. It has a great 3-D movie, and was well worth the extra 3.50 we paid for our tickets.
Visiting these sites before walking along Hadrian's Wall helped us to better understand what we were looking at, and appreciate this engineering feat.

Very interesting and still developing site, well signed around the outdoor areas and a museum of numerous artefacts. Particularly impressed by the Vindolanda tablets, the earliest example of the written word in Britain giving an insight to life in Northumberland in Roman times. Will return again in a few years to see if anything else is unearthed.
