Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

A fantastic site with so much to see and do. The male guide was excellent- informative and interesting and really made the visit. I normally like to check things out myself but after the tour I would always now recommend it to people.

There is so much to see in this impressive museum and archaeological site. The extraordinary preservation of the everyday artefacts of Roman life makes this as important as Pompeii or Herculaneum. The wooden postcards with the minutiae of ordinary communications between those who lived in the houses, barracks, forts and stores that make up this settlement near Hadrian's Wall are as close as it is possible to get to time travel. I felt as though I were reading their Facebook pages! And if you thought your sandals were well made, intricate and fashionable, look at theirs and think again.
Vindolanda staff helped us to make the most of our short visit, and the enthusiasm of the amateur archaelogists having a break in the cafe was infectious. It is easy to understand why volunteers come back for the digging season year after year.
A remarkable site, superbly presented.

We had a great day at Vindolanda! We went on the free guided tour which I would recommend to get a true sense of what you are looking at as the site is complex. Steve was our guide and he was great fun and knowledgable! There is as much time as you like to roam all over the site even if you take the tour. We got to watch diggers in action which was fascinating. The museum is very interesting and the thing that have been found on the site are amazing, particularly the wooden postcards!

You will never find a place like this elsewhere in the UK. You have the opportunity to view, get involved, listen, eat & drink! On a good weather day you can see across the Northumberland Tyne valley and over the North Pennines into Cumbria.

During the "Digging Season" (Easter to September - see their website) you can see work in progress, talk to the "diggers" (from all over the world) see the days finds and in some cases hold them. The site & museum are very much alive with ongoing projects and interesting to all age groups. School trips during term time do not detract from the experience.
