Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

Generally speaking I find these sort of sites to be patronising to the extreme with very little 'real' educational value. In other words, plenty of packaging and no substance. So, my wife's proposal to visit this venue was not met with a great deal of enthusiasm.

However, my predetermined prejudice was unfounded. Many of the exhibits displayed in the exhibition centre were thoughtful and educative. Furthermore. visitors can view the live archeological digs being undertaken at the actual fort and vicus.

Well worth the admission fee.

“A good day off walking”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

Did this on my own and felt very safe. It is a large site with Roman fort ruins and the ruins of the "Vicus" which grew up outside the walls to support the fort. Excavations ongoing and Director very willing to talk. Small but interesting museum and great cheese scones in the coffee shop!

“Bigger than we expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2013

We had the joint ticket with the Roman Army Museum, which made it good value. The site is huge and there is active excavation going on. We saw a few bits of Roman pot dug up before our eyes. Museum was also good and nice coffee shop. Biggest collection of Roman shoes!

“VINDOLANDA ROMAN FORT HADRIANS WALL”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

Vindolanda is one of many attractions situated along HADRIANS WALL. When we visited there were two seperate excavations going on with occasional discoveries being made of jewellery etc.
The site is spread out as it is a roman village eventually leading down to the cafe and museum.
Check out the horse mask and repro of it in the museum. If you sit outside at the cafe, birds will come to your table for crumbs. A good day out.

“Impressive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

A live archaeological site, this is a truely impressive example of the far northern Roman endeavour. The on-site museum is modest but very decent and sports a lot of examples from a soldier's everyday life. Very nice!
