“What a lovely place!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Just got back from a 3 night stay at the boatside where we enjoyed exploring Hexham and the surrounding countryside visiting the historic attractions such as Hadrian's wall, The Old Gaol and Hexham Abbey.

The Inn was excellent. The food lovely, the room lovely and the staff lovely. Everyone was so friendly and eager to please.

I would recommend the Boatside to anyone.

Came to the boatside for a stay overnight and had the best time away in a long time. From the minute I walked through the door I was made to feel at home. I came over for a meal in the evening and had a sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection. And the homemade onion rings where to die for! The atmosphere was lovely and the staff were really helpful and welcoming. I will definately be staying here again.

Went here for an evening meal expecting good things, my starter was the scallops - tiny frozen and over cooked. Why people would have such a dish like scallops and use cheap frozen products is beyond me - suppose it's my fault for not asking where they're from. To finish off I had an absolute mountain of salad to disguise the miniscule portion.

The main was "braised steak" straight out of the microwave, if anyone has tried to microwave gravy you will know how it goes around the edge of a plate. Main was served with mash and over cooked veg. Then again the "chef" was more interested in standing behind the bar watching football on the TV.

For 2 starters 2 mains and 1 dessert and a.couple of drinks the bill came to £60. Should have just had a meal at Wetherspoons which would have been on a par. At least I would have had a free pint with my meal there.

I received such frosty and rude emails when trying to book a small party...I gave up. We were trying to rent all rooms and cottages, which were not cheap (80 pounds b and b after negotiation but the cottage only rented by the week) A beautiful location but there are plenty of other options in the local area

Recently visited this pub after reading its reviews on here. We arrived early in the evening and found no one else in the dining room. We were greeted by a member of staff and seated. After this, the experience went down hill.

Placed the order which arrived 10 minutes later. Well some of the order came. One meal was missing egg, pineapple and salad and then the sides never materialised. just as we were finishing the food we did get, the salad arrived in a bowl. Needless to say it was sent back. They even tried to charge for all the order that they did not provide and when our dis satisfaction was brought to the staffs attention, they dismissed it. In the end we paid for what we had received and promptly left and went elsewhere for drinks and dessert. Would not recommend.

A couple of years ago my wife and I married in her home country of Vietnam. We decided that we'd renew our vows in the UK for the members of the family who couldn't make it the first time around. Having visited the registry office we booked a family lunch at the Boatside.

They were fantastically accommodating, service was great and the food was wonderful

We had a number of small kids in our party and they were great with them. They made sure we were all served quickly and, in general, they just made sure everything went smoothly and we had a very warm welcome. Huge thanks to them

Just returned from staying 3 nights here. Great location for seeing Hadrian's Wall. We went to Chesters which was excellent. Weather was very kind to us. Cold but blue skies (November)
Also went to a place Allen Banks which was beautiful.
The Inn was very comfortable and very clean. Room was large (we stayed in Homer).
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast's excellent and set us up for the day. We ate every night there and didn't have a bad meal. Portions were very large and food quality was excellent.
Newcastle isn't far away, Metro Centre 30 minutes drive away. Hexham is about 3 miles away and is a pleasant market town. If you don't want to drive there a bus will take you there picking up right outside the pub.
Thanks to all for making our stay a good one and we will return.
