Owner description: 78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton. Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions. 78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

“House designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh”

Beautiful house. The owners planned the house conversion and furniture with Mackintosh. George Bernard Shaw was a frequent visitor. It was rather small for the tours, there were two taking place when I was there. I liked the garden, and the restaurant/cafe was excellent

This is a beautiful Art Deco house - the only one in England with the full Charles Rennie Mackintosh treatment.

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

Have to thank Tripadvisor for finding this place. Up for a rugby match at the weekend but found time to do the guided tour. Quick view of the exterior at the back, followed by a 15 minute video about the restoration, then on with the protective shoes and a fascinating guided tour of more than an hour.
Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Two for the price of one for English Heritage members.
Definitely well worth doing if your in these parts and interested in design.

“Much overdue visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

I've been meaning to visit 78 Derngate for years as I live only 20 minutes away from Northampton. Finally, I made it there last Sunday with 2 friends (one of whom had been some years before). We thought it was absolutely terrific, so thrilling to see Mackintosh designs up close and our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. 78 Derngate is an absolute hidden gem and the adjoining restaurant 'The Dining Room' is a must. Fabulous visit, will definitely go again.
