Owner description: The beautiful Grade II* Listed Delapre Abbey, just one mile from Northampton town centre, is entering an exciting new phase in its history. Following the success of a Heritage Lottery Fund application in 2013, a £6.3 million project is underway to repair and restore this previously listed "Building At Risk". The Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust is working with Northampton Borough Council to involve the community and volunteers in the restoration project and will then manage and operate the Abbey for the benefit of the public. The Abbey will be opening its doors to visitors for the first time in its 900 year history in spring 2017, with The Trust managing the building as a fantastic historic venue for local, national and even international visitors.

Visited late summer early autumn. Having a wheelchair to push meant it was a little difficult to get around easily but we managed. Had tea and cake in the cafe run by volunteers who all seemed very pleasant. Nice play for an afternoon cuppa.

This is a very nice place to spend some time.

There is open space to run around in; there is wooded space to meander in; there is even a lake close at hand.

There is a cafe run by volunteers - which means that the prices are good, and that the food is often home made - great !

Once a year there is a beer festival - fabulous !

In good weather I am a regular visitor either walking (3 miles each way) or biking or by car. Delapre Abbey is the forgotten gem of Northampton. Interesting walled garden, pleasant parkland setting, interesting arboretum walk and longer walk around the lake; all very good. Unfortunately all this is let down by the shambolic cafe where despite a professional manager the volunteer staff represent a cross between Fawty Towers and Acorn Antiques though you might be interested to see this as a feature!

This buuilding has been under threat of being demolished and built over. The struggle to save it for all times is maybe not yet over. My own involvement is on a voluntary side - gardening when my own free time permits. I think it deserves a wider exposure to our visitors from everywhere. It is definitely worth it.
