Had a late lunch in the Wig and Pen on Saturday. Smoked fish platter was excellent, there were plenty of other options on menu and sandwiches we saw looked great. There were 10 or so bitters on tap plus a good selection of lagers and ciders. A number of TVs showing rugby. Large outdoor covered area.
Went back Saturday evening for a drink, was a bit noisy for a quiet pint, but I guess we weren't their target customers at that time.
All in all an interesting, town centre pub that caters for a range of tastes.

2 hungry blokes, 2 steaks ordered, a rib eye and a Rump steak. Both steaks cooked to perfection and served with an excellent side salad. Steaks were tender, lean and had great flavour. We had a bottle of Malbec which was excellent value. Pub was busy for a Monday but staff were really good. See you next Monday

Always been a great pub for food and drink, but even better with a new chef. Meals are a bit more pricey than before, but well worth it,

I've eaten in the Wig (or Black Lion as it should be) three times now, having had, last time, the seafood platter which was great but broke the bank somewhat. This time three of us had Sunday lunch to break up our heritage weekend tours. Food was tasty, and there was plenty of it. The only gripes I could come up with was paying nearly a tenner for a pub Sunday lunch was a bit steep. OK the food is great, but you are still in a pub with the table next to us occupied by three characters swilling lager and cursing over the sport on the big TVs. I'd rather have a cheaper meal or a better dining environment, personally. And the bottle of brown ale I had with my roast beef was £4.50! £4.50 for a brown ale? Would never have happened when Turvey was the landlord.
