“Perfect for a City Break.”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of February 2014 and we loved it.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Everything we could see in the Hotel was clean and tidy.
We only had breakfast whilst we were there and it was excellent, hot, well presented, plenty of choice and I assume eat as much as you want (we ate enough).
The restaurant staff were very polite and helpful.
We will stay there again.

Only stayed one night, but the hotel was fine. Slightly expensive at £110 when you consider you have today £10 on top for parking, but I guess to be that close to the centre and all the touristy stuff, you would expect to pay for it. Breakfast was good and the staff were fine. Room was a bit small, but fine for one night.

Although Hotel 53 is in a great position and staff seem helpful, the price of a Family sized room is quite expensive for what you get. It's effectively a standard double with a pull out sofa, but when the sofa is pulled out there is no room either side of the bed and you have to crawl in from the end and you can only access the sofa bed from one side, so you are all really on top of each other! The room we were offered at first had an adjoining door but as we could hear every single noise from the cleaners when we arrived, I requested to change rooms because I didn't want my boys to disturb anyone that may arrive later. Reception were very accommodating and were happy to change our room however this may have been a bad decision as we ended up in 112 (I think), which is directly above the outside bins and is next to the road. It was quite cold in the room and the heating wasn't on, but we found out in the morning that the window was slightly ajar and funnily enough someone else had commented on this who had stayed in this room the night before. The worst bit was still to come when we were all woken at 4.20am in the morning as they came to collect the bins, lots of loud voices and crashing and banging from the bins! General noise from the road and the bins, came and went from then onwards, so we didn't get much sleep. All in all for the price we paid and the fact that breakfast was extra, I think we might try the hotel across the road, Sorry:(

Room Tip: Do not book room 112 if you want a good nights sleep!

We paid under £100 for 1 night B&B and thought we had excellent value for money. Its a modern hotel with sufficent amenities for a short stay. The room was spot on for the money - you can't expect the Ritz for under £100! It was equipped with everything we needed and of reasonable size. The breakfast was lovely and can't be faulted at all. the location of the hotel is brilliant - only a 10 minute walk into city centre and there is a car park opposite the hotel with a cost of £10 for 24hrs. Will return and have recommended it to others.

We stayed in Hotel 53 when we came down for the last weekend of the Viking Festival. We had booked a family room as we were booking last year and weren't sure if we would bring the kids or not. I would say that it was a good sized double but for the price as a family I would have been very happy and as a couple we had plenty of room. Nice thick towels, good bed linen, comfy bed and the shower was very good. The hotel was pretty quiet considering how many guests were staying and everything was very clean. Staff all seemed very professional and friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to family and friends. There is a Wetherspoons just opposite if you wanted to have dinner on a budget at the weekend or just for breakfast if you have room only. The restaurant looked nice but we did not eat there.

Whilst we only stayed for one night, you could easily stay for 2 or 3 nights at this hotel. It's located close enough to the city centre to not be worried about transport during your stay. It is however down a very quiet commercial/industrial type street, so could be a little unnerving if you're on your own at night.

The room was a great size even though the double sofa bed was pulled out for our son to sleep on. The bathroom was also a good size - with a fabulous shower and amazingly fluffy towels. The main bed was also really comfy with good quality bed linen. There was minimal hanging space - but only what you'd expect at this type of hotel.

There was a bar downstairs which served a limited 2 lagers and 1 bitter on draft - but there was a good wine list and a fair number of spirits behind the bar. The breakfast was really good - all hot, and even the sausages were really nice (I'm fussy when it comes to sausages!). All the staff that we encountered during our stay were friendly and all dressed in a 'corporate' uniform.

I think the only critisicm would be that the matress on the sofa bed was quite thin - but this is what we've come to expect with sofa beds.

Our advice for a family would be to ask if there are any rooms on the back of the hotel. There is a very busy pub across the road and there was considerable noise until the pub shut. If you're out drinking in York it wouldn't really bother you!

Would we come back? Absolutely!

Be warned that some of the booking websites quote this hotel as having a family room, which as a family of 4, we booked. It was not a family room, but a double room into which the hotel had shoehorned a double sofa-bed. In so doing, they had to push the double bed up against one wall meaning that there was not room to walk around both sides of either the double bed or the sofa-bed. I had to crawl up the bed to get into it and then had the unpleasant experience of the room heater against my left leg all night as the bed had been pushed up against this. The bed was comfortable enough but the bed stead rocked a lot making for a fitful night's sleep (not helped by the room backing onto the side of the hotel where, late at night, they decided to throw out all of the empty bottles into a bin). Very loud and with two young children, not ideal. On the positive side, the hotel was well situated to walk into the city centre and the cost was acceptable, although £10 plus for breakfast I felt was too steep (especially when there is a rival hotel across the road offering breakfast cheaper and where kids eat free). We will not be staying here on our next visit.
