Positives - great staff, really friendly and smiley! Had dinner in the hotel (as a group) and was fine. Good location. Clean rooms.
Negatives- Room pretty standard, on a busy road and window didn't keep out street noise. Blinds didn't really keep out daylight, could really do with curtains to improve room acoustics, street noise, block daylight and make room look more luxurious/less bland. There are only 2 electric plugs in the room and no bed side lamp or bedside table.
Fine for one or two nights.

We booked to stay here as we just wanted somewhere to rest our head, which was within walking distance to the city centre as we had a busy weekend planned in York.

The rooms are basic but clean and if you come knowing this you won't be disappointed.

The bed is comfortable, the shower powerful. Hotel 53 offers everything you will need for a overnight stay. If your looking for luxury then this isn't the place.

The one complaint I have is the walls are really thin we could here people talking in the room next door, which could be a problem if the people are really noisy, luckily our neighbours were not.

Overall as the title says a cheap and cheerful base to enjoy a weekend in York, if the main reason your visiting is for the tourist attractions.

Stayed for a long weekend in York. Nice decor, clean as a whistle, very nice restaurant and friendly efficient staff. A little bit of a walk into old York but otherwise great stay, close to other eateries and pubs with ample parking which is secure! Really pleasant modern stylish hotel!

Hotel 53 is in a great location, and a five minute walk into the city centre. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bar man gave a great recommendation on where to eat out. Clean and modern room but extremely uncomfortable bed .... Loved York and could have stayed longer but not on that mattress !

Me and my girlfriend stayed in the hotel for 2 nights last week. The hotel was quite pricey and after reading some reviews about the noise and size of the rooms we were having second thoughts, for the record we didn't have any of these problems at all. We stayed on the 4th floor and never heard any noise outside the room or outside the hotel. The room was a decent size, I don't know what others expected but we thought it was big enough. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The maid cleaned our room on the second day and decided to tidy our toiletries in the bathroom and tidy our cases away and put clothes back into them which was a nice gesture but others could take the wrong way regarding their personal belongings!
The only down side in my opinion was the breakfast, there wasn't much on offer but don't let that put you off, it was still nice.
As for location, a few minutes walk into centre which is great. You can get to the shambles in 5mins!!

I would definitely go back!

When you spend £100 on a hotel room for one night you expect basic amenities along with, perhaps, the odd luxury.

On first appearances, the hotel reception looks smart, modern and stylish. Good choice it seemed. They even had one of those new slick Dyson blade-less fans sitting on floor just to keep that ambient temperature 'just right'. nice.

Upon entry to the room- thats where the 'luxury' stopped.

The only 2 plug sockets in the room- opposite end to the bed. 15 feet away.

The TV didn't work.

the Carpet wasn't fitted properly and was loose in parts.

There only place to hang clothes was right outside the bathroom door, on hangers from shelves about 7 foot high. No good for the vertically challenged- like the missus.

The duvet cover was too small for the duvet itself.

The fire door opposite our room sounded as if it was lucky to still be hung judging by the amount of times I heard it slammed during the night. I would have suggested they check them but the mood I was in was far from helpful.

The sink tap wobbled as it wasn't fitted properly and was covered in limescale.

There wasn't even a picture or painting on the wall. Just plain white walls. Dentist's waiting rooms have more character.

If you wanted a drink near by the bed, it had to go on the floor as there wasn't any bed side tables.

To get back to the bed when you turn off the lights at night, you needed Army calibre night vision goggles as the only light switches are by the door or at the 'TV' end due to the lack of plug sockets in any obvious positions of the room.

And when wanting a shower in the morning, there was no hot water.

There was a small, seemingly pre-rehearsed apology along with a nervous smile from reception but nothing else. No discount. Zilch.

You can stay in a Campanile Hotel and it would seem like the Ritz compared to this place.

£100 good value? I think not.

Thank you for your comments.

I am very sorry that, for a number of reasons, it seems that Hotel53 was not to your personal liking.Hotel53's interior was designed to evoke an atmosphere of stylish simplicity with a concept of minimalism, and as such, it delivers.

I am also sorry to learn that the carpet appeared to be 'loose' and that the TV didn't appear to work, but had you brought this to our attention, we could have offered you an alternative room or, if you had preferred, I am sure our Maintenance Team could have resolved these issues very quickly whilst you enjoyed a drink in the bar area - which would have been complimentary for any inconvenience occured.

As a result of your review, we have instructed the Housekeeping team to check all of the bathroom taps and ensure that they are secure and any limescale, if found, is subsequently removed.

I am also very sorry that you struggled to obtain hot water when showering. Unfortunately we discovered a hairline crack in one of our two boilers over the weekend which we had to turn off to ensure everyone's safety, and therefore we had only one boiler to service demand for hot water, which, at peak times, proved difficult. However, we are pleased to confirm that the boiler we had to shut down has been subsequently replaced earlier this week and that this problem has consequently been resolved.
