“Afternoon tea”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

Friendly staff but did not get much for your money. Expected more from this hotel. On the otherhand the cocktails were nice and work out cheaper if you do afternoon tea with cocktails. Only a few sandwiches between 3 and the tea came in bags

“Dinner with a colleague”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2014

Staying in York for business I needed to meet a colleague for dinner. Since he was staying at Hotel du Vin this became the default choice! I understand that the restaurant has recently acquired a new chef but he has clearly found his feet since the food was excellent. Mackerel pate was followed by 'Chicken Forestiere' which was an interesting mix of languages... however, both went down well and were followed by sherry trifle served in a wine glass!

The service was..... interesting. Most of the staff are young men (students?) and although some lacked confidence they were attentive and helpful, the sommelier admitted that he had only been in the job three months and it was a shame that in an hotel with such a name that he was not being shadowed by a senior member of staff. The wine list is impressive (as it should be!) but our request for a Jurancon Sec resulted in the production of a bottle of Sancerre. Once this confusion had been resolved a very good bottle was produced and was duly shared with the young sommelier (how else will he learn?). Perhaps the addition of bin numbers to the wine list would help both customers and staff?

All in all a very pleasant evening in convivial surroundings.

“Excellent Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

We booked a Sunday night room with a meal, all so that we could take our 19 month old son to the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik centre. When booking, explained that we needed a room in baby-monitor distance of the bistro, and the staff could not have been more helpful. Unlike many places that -at best - tolerate young children, HdV bent over backwards to make our stay comfortable and as easy as possible.
Supper was generally good, marred by a couple of avoidable issues; trainee (surely stand-in?) sommelier didn't know the wine list, and my soufflé was served (after a considerable wait) still raw. The soufflé was served with a knowing grimace from the waiter - it was replaced with a cognac on the house whilst my wife had crepe suzette. At the time I didn't think it overshadowed the meal, but looking back I can't remember what I ate!
I would definitely go again; a city centre room and a good meal with excellent service at a reasonable price.

“Nice meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Went on a very rainy wet night but inside warm and comfortable great choice of wines but only bottled beer. We were brought our menus and sat trying very hard to read them as it was so dark. Chose our food off the menu and taken into restaurant which was also too dark i like candlelight but could hardly see our food. Our starters arrived I had moules my hubby had prawn cocktail both tasty the for mains I had pork belly and hubby had boeuf baize with duck egg mine a bit bland but the beef amazing. Not really too much to complain about but thought the service charge a bit steep so for £80 2starters 2 mains and a bottle of wine would have cost enough without the charge. It was nice but not sure if I would go back.

“Great Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2014 via mobile

We popped in for lunch and we were glad we did. The food was great as was the service. The menu was fairly small but a great choice with everything sounding fab. Both of our meals were really tasty and we would definitely go back. With drinks (wine and beer), bread (complimentary), two starters, 2 main courses, coffee (with complimentary biscuits) the bill came to £71, but we both agreed was worth the money. This place is a bit special with lots of attention to detail.
