Description: La Vecchia Scuola is a unique dining experience that can be found in Low Petergate, York very close to the Minster. An amazing restaurant set in a 300 year old Georgian building that was once York college for girls. This restaurant is now operated by new owners from February 2013. It has an innovative new menu with all food sourced locally and prepared for customer onsite.

Had pizza and pasta here on a Sunday afternoon. Was cooked well and was enjoyable but other tables nearby had the Sunday dinner and that looked terrible. Service was ok waiting/time wise but not very friendly.
Price was good for what we had, generous portions.
We ate in the conservatory which was nice but the main building does not have a very nice atmosphere.
Ok experience but would not recommend, plenty of other places to choose from.

We ate at this restaurant on a recent visit to York. The decor is really nice and there is a lovely conservatory at the back, where we ate. I agree with some of the other reviews that it was a bit chilly in here (that is why I have given four stars rather than 5), but I do think they are aware of it and are trying to do smething about it.
The food was excellent, we ordered from a special menu which was two courses for £10.00. This was quite flexible as you could have starter/main or main/pudding. We chose chicken breast in a marsala and mushroom sauce for mains and a calzone pizza. Both wew delicious. There was a choice of three puddings in total and we ordered a banoffee pie and a lemon and lime paneccotta, both were really lovely. The waiters were very efficient and even speeded up the arrival of our deserts once we explained we had to leave promptly to catch our train. All in all, this was an excellent meal and really good value for money. If I ever return to York, I will certainly go back.

This is a great spot with a lovely conservatory with Minster and garden views. However, a mid february snowy night does not create the right atmosphere nor did the lack of adequate heating either. Good attentive service but the food is a good average, no more than that. The Antipasto was basic with no flair and the and garlic bread only ok, cool and not very garlicky. The Seafood Linguine was decent, very tasty, freshly made flavoursome, but with some tiny mussels 3 king prawns, some squid rings and whilc theree was plenty of pasta and the tasty sauce, it wasn't as hot as it could have been. The prices are not cheap and there are many better value restaurants out there and pubs in which to eat. It would only be the view which would attract us back.

We had heard from friends to look out for an Italian restaurant with a glass conservatory on the back, but they had no idea where it was or what is was called, so we didn't think we would find it, however we happened to stop and look at the menu & made a reservation for later that evening at a restaurant.

On our return to dine we were escorted in the conservatory which was a lovely surprise, it's set in the old York girls college' building, I have to say it does not look anything special from outside, & it was only the menu that drew us in. It needs more curb appeal.

The service started of well, very attentive to start, then seamed to get a bit lax to the Point we had to ask to order food, extra drinks coffees etc.

Good choice on the menu, a few vegetarian options, okay drinks selection.

I started with baked goats cheese on salad leaves which was delicious, although a little on the steep side at £6.95 & then couldn't decide between two pasta dishes, so my friend & I order one of each & split them both between us, got some strange looks from the servers!, but what the heck.
You can't really go wrong with pasta, but it wasn't the best I've had especially given the price £10-£12.

Coffee was hot & strong,
& the pianist was really good.

With more attentive servers & less pricey food this would be a great place to eat.
