“Perfect family weekend”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Hotel for two nights as a family as part of my birthday celebrations. The weekend was fantastic from start to finish - the atmosphere relaxing and friendly from the minute you enter the hotel. Staff were especially good and welcoming to our three year old daughter - this made all the difference. Unfortunately we didn't catch the restaurant managers name - she worked both evenings but she was absolutely superb.
We ate both nights in the bistro , trying both the prix fixe and a la carte. The former is very good value . The cocktail and wine list is so extensive you would be pushed to find something you don't love - wouldn't mind a fortnight to work through the list !
The hotel manager is also visible, friendly and chats to the guests which is so unusual these days.
Rooms are very comfortable and my daughter had a proper bed which she was very impressed with. The Nespresso machine is a nice touch as are the magazines.
Having stayed at other York hotels and been disappointed we are now converts to this one - relaxing , luxurious and family friendly .

Stayed one night in this hotel and loved it. Lovely feel to the room and hotel in general. We had a lovely meal in the Bistro in the evening. The roll top bath and the huge shower really made the room. Would stay again.

This is the 2nd time I have stayed here (once just after it opened) and one of many HdV stays around the country.

My overall impression is that the main building, bar and bistro all have that HdV feel that you expect (can't comment on modern annexe) but I felt that the rooms are showing signs of wear and the level of service in the bistro (from the more junior members of staff) was not what I would expect. In addition, my room (in the old building) was affected by clattering of plates and bottles by the kitchen staff until about 1am!

All that said, the food served was great and reception staff very good.

If you want the top drawer HdV experience then Winchester and Bristol do it for me.

This hotel was perfect in every way for a recent stay in York for our son's wedding. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming, helpful, interested, polite and helped to make our weekend such a success. The room was ready early for our check in. Food was very good and our room quiet, looking over the back of the hotel where the sun comes up. Would recommend without hesitation.

We stayed for one night in this hotel and it was lovely. Everything you'd expect from a quality hotel. Clean, with lovely decor (the photos on the website were accurate) and the king sized bed was very comfy. We ate in the Bistro as the meal was included in the £109 price of the room (which we thought was good value). The food was very good.

I particularly enjoyed the free sample of red velvet cheesecake we were greeted by upon checking in at reception. Nice little touch.

Overall very nice. I would stay again if the price was as good.

Room Tip: Our standard room was very comfortable and as depicted on the website photos. Perfectly suitable for...

We'd booked a few days here as part of our honeymoon. After staying in the ginormous suite at the Tunbridge Wells hotel, we thought it would be a come down to stay in the standard room, but although it was quite small, it was very pleasant.

What made our trip though was the staff. A bottle of champagne was sent up for us on arrival and the front desk staff could not have been any friendlier or more helpful in helping us plan our day, offer cake or just chat. And our meal in the restaurant was excellent - a delicious chateaubriand and an inspiring chat with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable sommelier made it feel more than a bistro.

Thank you Hotel du Vin for a lovely start to married life - we'll definitely be back!
