“Just what we were looking for...”

We arrived by train from London and it was an easy walk of less than 10 minutes to the hotel. Check in was quick and pleasant, and the room pure joy. Actually, it was the heated floor in bathroom and the rain shower that made it so special. Our room (which we could never remember the name of) faced the back parking lot and was very quiet.

One night we took advantage of the special restaurant offer in their bistro - terrific. Two courses for 2 people plus bottle of wine for 35 pounds.

Walk into town took us about 15 minutes at a good pace - wished it was a little closer but as the hotel was literally right on the open bus tour, that worked for us. My husband coerced me into a ghost tour in the evening, and it was okay...laughed a few times and spent the rest of the time figuring out how much the guide could be making in the summer months. There must have been 50-60 people signing up for the 1-hr tour.

At the end of the visit we rented a car from the train station and visited the Yorkshire Dales, beautiful.

This hotel was recommended to us by a York resident, and they sure knew what they were talking about.

Overall, the hotel is very well presented with good amenities and very well situated if you want to wander into the city centre.

Rooms- We were lucky enough to stay in one of the deluxe rooms - it was stunning, with a roll top bath in the bedroom, gorgeous decor and a gorgeous, plush bathroom! They even have a Nespresso machine in the room, which was a real treat.

Service- The staff were extremely professional, kind and welcoming- some of the best I have ever encountered. On arrival the receptionist offered us a map of the local area and even some tips of where to head to. Everyone was friendly, smart and professional.

Food & Drink- The wine list was extensive and delicious (as you would hope!) and the Sommelier was knowledgeable, sensitive and not in the least pushy or snobby.

The food was the biggest let down- the menu seemed quite limited, we ate in two nights running and that is all I would have wanted. On reflection, I don't think the food was the best value for money. On one hand, it seemed like they were trying too hard to be fancy (3 little gem leaves and 3 teaspoons of smoked fish for +£8!) and the portions were stingy- a bit too nouveau cuisine. At the other end, it was burgers and fries, which seems a bit of a shame for a higher end hotel.

Another thing that disappointed me was that the hotel charges £10 a day to use the hotel car park- I hate that kind of greediness! For the price you pay, they should make it free on first come first served basis.

All in all, I liked the hotel and would go back, but I wouldn't want to eat there again.

Just one night here on 13th August in small standard room appropriately aired. Fully stocked mini-bar and excellent courtesy tray. Bathroom absolutely perfect. Breakfast was excellent. Cannot remember tariff but it was much less than charged at Danesfield House(see earlier review) and given its position in central York a city that has much to offer, we thought overall it was a very good experience.

Excellent stay, superb staff, convenient location and great value for the luxury and service. I believe this is our future home away from home in York.

Nice hotel near enough to walk into York. Comfortable clean rooms in listed building. What makes this hotel is the great attitude of the staff, mainly young people and they all took e in their work and came across with a real positive happy and helpful attitude about their work. Only thing that stops the hotel getting top marks is that is a liitle expensive for food and drink,

I agree that the reception area was a bit confusing to find. The staff were really helpful and helped us with bags when we arrived and when we left. We had our two kids with us and they had set up single beds. Room was plenty big enough. Great bathroom and tub to soak in! Super comfortable beds! Not a cheap hotel but worth the splurge!

Came to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was great, we were upgraded to a suite, which topped it off. Great large bed, loved the bath and the shower. Can't wait to come again.
